George asks…

what is a natural remedy to make high blood pressure go down?

My wife is having a hard time with her blood pressure. One minute it’s up, next, it’s down. She is on 3 meds but is getting off two, one of them (clonodine) is making it go high, getting off of it. What can I give her to make it go down quickly?

vti answers:

Some herbs have an effect on normalizing high blood pressure. Some that I have seen used or have used myself are Noni juice (my herbalist friend used it with her son when UCLA could not control his BP), Ganoderma lucidum (mild), and Salvia miltiorrhiza (usually comes with notoginseng in tablets.)
High blood pressure can also be reduced by acupuncture. There is a place in the fold of the elbow that is effective. Have your acupuncture doctor show it to you.

Nancy asks…

natural cures for high blood pressure?

I have a friend with diabetes type 1 that is presently being bothered by elevated blood pressure readings.
does anyone know of some natural remedies?

thanks for all the in-put. My friend is already very involved in using natural alternatives. He is also very physically active.
His recently ordered some Oriental suppliments that are supposed to help this situation
J.B.
thanks, but my friend has been a type 1 (IDDM ) for over 30 yrs. He is in excellent physical shape , except for this issue
leslie:
yes, he is using celery, but along with sodium-free V8 – which worked for him once before

vti answers:

My wife has tried many things and we will keep trying.

If fact she has added salt to her diet! What! Added salt. Yes.

There is no end to the number of natural cures for high blood pressure. Problem is they don’t all work for everybody but then neither do the drugs and the drugs have side effects.

Try http://curezone.com/

Also read testimonials here about the water cure which is where it tells you to add sea salt to your water and to drink sufficient amounts, avoid caffeine etc. Etc. Etc. Http://www.watercure2.org/high_blood_pressure.htm & http://www.watercure2.org/bolen_hbp.htm and http://www.healingdaily.com/conditions/heart-disease-3.htm

They say to eat 4 stalks of celery a day, also chayote squash is suppose to be good. For some the Resperate device is suppose to work which is available from Amazon. I think it has a 60 day money back guarantee this time of year due to the holiday. My wife tried it and while it did help her relax, it didn’t do anything for her blood pressure. We got out money back from Amazon. Two other products that are suppose to work are the trace element indium and supplementing with a safe form of iodine. My wife is presently trying both of these. We don’t check her blood pressure regularly partly because some of these products are reported to take 90 days to work. However she went to the doctors about a month ago and her BP was lower than what it usually is. She presently takes 1 drop of indium in the morning and 50mg of Iodoral a day plus other things she has been trying for some time.

Supplementing with magnesium is also suggested. Garlic too.

In my wife’s case it is only her systolic pressure that is high. Her diastolic pressure is normal.

Celery’s potential for reducing high blood pressure has long been recognized by Chinese medicine practitioners, and Western science researchers may have recently identified one reason why. Http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=14#healthbenefits

More suggestions here: http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=disease&dbid=15 and here: http://ezinearticles.com/?Powerful-Natural-Remedies-for-Hypertension-Uncovered&id=847207

Please note I have posted only links to web pages which do not promote a commercial product except for Iodoral and the indium supplement [both of which are controversial] Both of these would be difficult to obtain merely from food.

The question is what is causing the high blood pressure? If it is weight then lose weight. If it is dehydration either of the circulatory system or the cells themselves then approach the problem from that standpoint. If it is hardening or the arteries another approach is needed such as vitamin K and/or pomegranate. If it is simply nerves and/or an inability to relax then that requires a different approach. This is why the same solution doesn’t work for everybody. If you can, find a good naturopathic physician or other natural care practitioner who can help you find a solution.

Daniel asks…

What are the benefits/secondary effects of cozar. what are the natural remedies to control high blood pressure?

Could you recommend healers with proven records helping people to live better without commercial drugs

vti answers:

Well, according to http://www.drugs.com/cozaar.html “Cozaar is in a group of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It keeps blood vessels from narrowing, which lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow and helps the kidneys to eliminate extra fluid.”
It also has a sizable list of adverse side effects on that page, so I would take a look at it.

As far as natural options, aside from diet (including salt restrictions) and exercise, there are some herbs that are very beneficial for Blood Pressure. The most popular ones are Fish Oil, Hawthorn Berries, L-Arginine, Resveratrol (which is in Red Wine), C12 Peptides (from milk protein casein), Bonito Peptides, and Garlic.
Good luck and I hope I helped!

vomiting sometimes

He had no other vices such as smoking, alcohol….

for now he is taking MAALOX PLUS. That’s what the doctor’s prescription.
Can you suggest effective treatment or HOME REMEDIES for hyperacidity or heartburn?

vti answers:

Digestive enzyme supplements from health food stores. By the way, most people who suffer acid reflux and heartburn have low stomach acid/lack of enzymes. Home remedy would be apple cider vinegar. Also, the H Pylori bacteria can cause this condition. To read more>>>>

Betty asks…

What are some good ways to relieve anxiety and depression?

I’ve been having some serious anxiety and mild depression since I went, and returned home from the hospital. It had made me quit smoking cigarettes and I don’t wanna bring back the habit, and I had ativan, but now I want to be med free. Help! Please!

vti answers:

Meditation, exercise, eating lots of fruits and vegetables, psychotherapy, spending time outdoors in the sun (the vitamin D in the sun helps), and spending time with people who love you all help. Try getting a blood test to see if you’re missing any important vitamins, if you are, supplements of those would help immensely. Good luck!

Laura asks…

I don’t live in US, Canada, or UK. I don’t have insurance, but I do have lots of debts and I suffer from depression and anxiety disorder. There is NO way I can get professional help or drugs (impossible).

How can I deal with by myself? All my friends live far away, don’t really have family. What can I do? Especially nights are horrible. I feel so lonely, panic and desperate.

William asks…

What kind of magnesium supplement helps with stimulant tolerance?

I bought some magnesium supplements because I seem to be getting a tolerance for my daily Adderall. Does it have to be a certain ‘kind’ of magnesium or be in a certain form to help reverse the tolerance?

vti answers:

Well avoid magnesium oxide as this is poorly absorbed. Take a chelated form such as magnesium citrate, glycinate or malate. These are far easier for the body to absorb. And the best way to take it is in combination with calcium or together alongside calcium in the ratio 1:2 magnesium:calcium as this is the optimum ratio found in nature, in dolomite [rocks] and our own body. Magnesium and calcium both support the nervous system. Taking vitamin C alongside magnesium may help with its absorption. More info regarding magnesium absorption:
http://www.ehow.com/how_3954_absorb-magnesium-supplements.html

Bathing in epsom salts will certainly boost your magnesium levels as some of the magnesium in epsom salts is absorbed through the skin. Epsom salts baths are used by many with ADD/ADHD.
You should also be taking fish oil. Read these

“Fish oil ‘calms children better than Ritalin'”

http://www.naturalnews.com/026782_magnesium_food_adhd.html
Magnesium: an Overview:
http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/magnesium-000313.htm
On the latter article, make sure you read the bit about ADHD and depression.

If you have developed a tolerance, you should discuss that with your doctor, and wean yourself off the Adderall with their approval. Take an article on fish oil with you and say you want to try that and also magnesium as an alternative to meds. If you are in the UK, you can certainly get fish oil on prescription under the label Omacor. It is prescribed primarily to heart patients but that does not mean some doctors won’t prescribe it for alternative uses.

Avoid food additives, especially aspartame and monosodium glutamate [MSG]. Check labels. “Flavour Enhancer” is nearly always MSG. Taking a B vitamin supplement [time release formulation] may also help as it does support the nervous system too. Avoid caffeine if it makes your symptoms worse.

Hope that helps.
Good luck.

Robert asks…

How to concentrate and focus while suffering from clinical depression?

I have always been pretty smart, or many people believe that I am. I have been suffering from clinical depression for some time now and recently started taking anti depressants and anxiety medication. Its pretty difficult being a college student because its difficult for me to focus and remember things being taught because I always have a lot on my mind. I believe that if I didnt suffer from depression a lot of things would not be as difficult for me to understand. Its like I always have brain fog. It really affects my ability to do well on test and I have finals coming up. No matter how much I study my mind goes blank and I get stressed while im taking the test. Any tips

vti answers:

I had the same problem, I am also a college student and had mild depression. I began self-medication with various over the counter supplements, which worked to some extend but didn’t do much to increase my focus and memory. There’s a drug called PIRACETAM, which you could buy from GNC or any on-line supplement store. Its proven to work very well, in fact, I have been taking it for over 2 years now and my college grades went from being a C student to being a B+ student. You will need to take piracetam three times daily with a choline supplement, and you will most definitely feel the difference, guaranteed! However, don’t take my word for it, do your own research. The best part about this drug is it contains virtually no side-effects.

Paul asks…

What is the most effective way to deal with anxiety and depression naturally?

Is there a way to treat moderate depression and anxiety without going on medication? Has anyone overcome depression through other means? Thanks.

vti answers:

Does talk therapy count as natural? Talk therapies of all modalities have been proven effective in treating depression.

If you’re just wanting a supplement, then read about St. John’s Wart. This herbal supplement is frequently used for treatment of depression (but beware! Just because it’s herbal, doesn’t mean that it is completely safe. St. John’s wart can have serious interactions with other medications.)

I disagree with the earlier suggestion of using Niacin. This would only be helpful if you have a preexisting B vitamin deficiency that’s causing your depression. It will do nothing for you otherwise.

Which vitamins are good for skin recovery?

I had chickenpox and now I’ve got loads of scabs which I am trying to heal as soon as possible. Which vitamins will help my skin recover/heal faster?

Thanks.
ALSO after the scabs fall off, I would need to heal the scars that are left behind as quickly as possible. Well not heal, but help improve their appearance?

vti answers:

Vitamin A:
Vitamin A is essential to keep skin’s elasticity, prevent dryness, wrinkles and aging of the skin.

Vitamin C:
Vitamin C keeps skin well-toned. A deficiency can cause wrinkles and skin discoloration. As skin ages, more vitamin C is essential to maintain elasticity.

Vitamin K:
Vitamin K is important for skin’s overall health, especially if you are prone to bruising.

These vitamins are available in supplements or as a topical cream.

Helen asks…

Best Way To use Vitamin E Skin Oil 56,000 I.U.?

I recently got a small bottle of Vitamin E Skin Oil 56,000 I.U. and I was wondering what is the best way to use it? Should I use it in the morning after I shower? Should I use it during the day and wash it off at night? Should I apply it and leave it on over night? I am 19 years old with very mild breakouts and I usually apply acne cream followed by a light sunscreen/moisturizer in the morning and at night.

vti answers:

Vitamin E oil can and will make your acne skin worse. Vitamin E these days all come from GMO soy. Google it: I dare you to find organic vitamin E. GMO”s are toxic. You could end up w/Morgellons.

What you want is Vitamin A for acne. You can get a serum or a cream. I prefer natural vitamin A (mine is a fish oil) but some people do retin A.

If you’re set on using the vitamin E do NOT use it on acne and dilute it: this stuff is too strong for the (oily) face.

Sharon asks…

pls name some vitamin c powder for skin?

i wanna apply vitamin c for my skin as i came to know that it is very effective for skin ( to get flawless glowing, less wrinkle, fineline free skin). so can any one pls suggest me names of some vitamin c powder and capsules for applying on skin . And also pls give the direction of using it ( can i use it daily? ). thanks

vti answers:

Vitamin C is the most popular and talked about vitamin of all, one which is needed in abundance for healthy and youthful skin. Not that it only helps our skin, it is a necessity for healthy skin. Consuming the right amount will protect your skin cells while applying on skin will retain the youthfulness.

Types of Vitamin C Powder

Granular L-ascorbic acid is commonly available as vitamin C powder. It has a tart taste and can be mixed with water or juice.C vitamin is available in tablets and capsules but powder form has its advantages.

I didnt say i wasn’t going to wash my face? i just dont want to use intense face wash. so im gonna try vitamins to improve my skin instead of a cleanser.

vti answers:

Fish oil vitamins suck but they give you health skin also honey dose wonders

Maria asks…

Skin vitamins? which one should i get?

I’m planning to get vitamins a,b,c, and e (i want to improve my skin health)
should i get edible/drinkables or apply on your skin ones? which one is much more effective?

vti answers:

Hi!
Vitamins are the substances which are essential for the normal structure and the functioning of the cells
vitamins are sub divided in to two categories which are further sub divided in to different types of vitamins
each vitamin has function on specific parts of the body physiologically
for the healthy and glowing skin it`s good to take vitamin A and vitamin B2 and niacin
any thing suits fine
topical applications have the action for less period of time and they are more useful for protection from the dust particles and the pollution or the sun rays where as the oral forms will show action physiologically.so, i will suggest you to consume vitamins orally.
I hope my answer is of use to you

Freshly killed sirloin beef joint how would I mature it?

How do you mature fresh meat it’s In an vacuum sealed bag and I don’t know what to do with it do I open it n cut it up how do I mature meat

vti answers:

Aging beef is not something most can do safely at home, it takes special coolers and the right conditions to do this correctly
if its too large for a single meal cut it up into portions and freeze what you won’t use right away
what I do is put cling wrap directly against the surface and then into a freezer bag, this will keep air from the surface of the meat and help prevent freezer burn

Jenny asks…

how to dry age a steak ???

I love good steak ! I ussually get really high quality, and rather expensive grass fed free range steaks, Ussually a porterhouse or ribeye. But i would like to have one that is dry aged, how can I do this at home and make sure it dosent go bad ?

vti answers:

Dry aging beef at home is not difficult to do at all. Yes it is difficult to get the same conditions as high end steak houses do it, but it isn’t all that difficult to get similar results.

One of the key differences between dry aging at home versus a professional butcher shop, is you don’t want mold to grow on your beef. Whereas if you are starting with a whole loin with the full thickness of fat and everything, the mold and dried out exposed parts of the loin are just trimmed off.

If you keep your home aged beef relatively dry and sanitary, you won’t grow mold, which needs a certain level of moisture. But you will get the proper moisure loss and the enzymes will start to do their thing.

I usually use a choice grade whole strip loin or rib eye from Costco. Rinse it well with cold water and pat dry with plenty of kitchen towels. Place it on a rack set over a sheet pan and put it in the fridge. I usually start fat side down, but you can start with either side up first depending on your personal technique.

Let it dry out for a week or two depending on your preference. Make sure there is plenty of room for air to circulate. Check the beef on a daily basis to make sure you don’t have a nice little microbiology science project on your hands.

As the beef ages in your fridge, use kitchen towels to mop excess moisture as needed and clean the drip pan if necessary to keep things sanitary.

You want the temp to be 33-35 farenheit.
Fridges with built-in circulation fans are best.
Don’t let the meat freeze or it won’t work.
I have found it takes 7-10 days to make a noticable difference in the texture and flavor of the beef.

Without a good week or more of time to dry age whole strip loins, I have cut double cut steaks first and “dried them out” a bit, standing them on the fatty edge. Doing this, for even 2-3 days makes a difference.

Overall, dry aging at home is not difficult, and is well worth results from the minimal effort needed

Ingredients

* 1 (4-bone-in) standing rib roast, preferably from the loin end
* Canola oil, to coat roast
* Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper, to cover entire roast
* 1 cup water
* 1 cup red wine
* 4 fresh sage leaves

Directions

Remove any plastic wrapping or butcher’s paper from the roast. Place the standing rib roast upright onto a half sheet pan fitted with a rack. The rack is essential for drainage. Place dry towels loosely on top of the roast. This will help to draw moisture away from the meat. Place into a refrigerator at approximately 50 to 60 percent humidity and between 34 and 38 degrees F. You can measure both with a refrigerator thermometer. Change the towels daily for 3 days.

Place a 16-inch round azalea terra cotta planter into a cold oven. Invert the planter to become a lid over a pizza stone or the bottom of the planter. The oven should be cold to start, to avoid any cracking in the terra cotta pieces. Turn the oven to 250 degrees F.

Remove the roast from the refrigerator and rub with canola oil. Remember to rub the bones with oil, as well. Once the roast is completely coated with oil cover the roast with kosher salt, about half a teaspoon per bone. Next, rub with freshly ground pepper to coat the surface. Place the roast over a glass bake-ware dish slightly smaller than the length of the roast. This will catch the drippings needed for the sauce. Finally, place a probe thermometer into the center of the roast and set for 118 degrees. Put the roast and the bake-ware dish onto the pizza stone, cover with the terra cotta pot, and return to the oven. Turn the oven down to 200 degrees F and roast until internal temperature is achieved.

Remove the roast and turn oven up to 500 degrees F. Remove the terra cotta lid and recover with heavy-duty foil. Allow the roast to rest until an internal temperature of 130 degrees F. Is reached. Place the roast back into the preheated 500 degree F oven for about 10 minutes or until you’ve achieved your desired crust. Remove and transfer roast to a cutting board. Keep covered with foil until ready to serve.

Degrease the juices in the glass pan. Place the pan over low heat and deglaze with 1 cup of water. Add the wine and reduce by half. Roll the sage leaves in between your fingers to release the flavors and aroma. Add to the sauce and cook for 1 minute. Strain and serve on the side.

Some Basics on Roast Beef

Roast beef is one of the big Sunday dinner dishes in both the US and England (where it’s probably the best known). Now I’m not quite sure of the difference between a Yorkshire pudding and a popover (I’m not, in fact 100% sure that there is one), but I will say that I have fond memories of eating roast beef for dinner as a kid with roasted onions, baked potatoes, and crusty bread (which I didn’t like until I was a teenager).

Well, we don’t do so much of it in my house these days, which is a shame. It’s rather nice to eat when made correctly; the problem is that there’s so many ways to do it. You could have a plain ol’ roast beef. You could go the extra mile with some prime rib. You could spit roast it; Brazilian churrasco is one prime example. You could slice it and stack it to make shawarma; you could marinate it for a week and make sauerbraten. But this recipe doesn’t do that, and you’ll like the end result anyway.

For the record, the technique here is to start with a pan-sear; surprisingly, this isn’t common knowledge, but this is solely to develop flavor. You’re not sealing anything in, just caramelizing the outside of the roast.

* 1 3-5lb (1.5-2 kg) beef roast (any cut will do; the recipe applied originally to prime rib)
* 1 medium-sized onion, sliced
* 1 carrot, chopped
* 2 ribs celery, chopped
* 2 large cloves garlic, sliced thin
* 1.5 c (400 mL) robust red wine (tested with a Pinot Noir)
* .5 tbsp flour and .5 tbsp butter, kneaded into a beurre manie
* olive oi

Herbal (ecstacy) Cigarettes?

Ok, so I just found out about the Herbal Cigarettes. I have always wanted to smoke but never wanted lung cancer.I was wondering what the harms were on these Cigs. Don’t say stuff like “Dude, grow up!” or “Don’t smoke” I just want to know what is bad about them or if they’re bad at all. Here are the specific ones I am looking at. http://www.altcigs.com/default.html

vti answers:

Well, here’s the thing about those. Regardless of what kind of smoke goes into your lungs, it’s bad for you. They contain a lot of bad things such as tar and carbon monoxide. If you read the warning on that page you would see that. Smoking is bad for our health, those are just an alternative for people who don’t want the addiction from nicotine. Be on the safe side and just remember it’s not that nicotine that’s bad for you, that just keeps you craving for more. It’s the other things as mentioned above that will harm you.

Here are the warnings that were listed on the site you posted:

Herbal Cigarettes are dangerous to your health.
They produce tar and carbon monoxide.

WARNING:
This Product Contains/Produces Chemicals Known To The State of California To Cause Cancer, And Birth Defects Or Other Reproductive Harm.

SURGEON GENERAL’S WARNING:
Smoking Causes Lung Cancer, Heart Disease,
Emphysema, And May Complicate Pregnancy.

Hopefully that information alone will answer your question.

William asks…

Are herbal cigarettes healthier?

I do not want to give up smoking yet but will Herbal cigarettes be a healthier alternative untill I do give up?

vti answers:

Healthier? Yes, but…

There are several herbal products to help you quit smoking. Herbal cigarettes are not designed for that. Try Smoke Free Drops by Herbs, Etc. Or a homeopathic remedy to help break the nicotine addiciton.

One of the things you’re going to miss when you quit is the blood sugar release that smoking gives. Your body is accustomed to a stimulus every 30 minutes, 2 hours or whatever. Without it, you will experience low blood sugar, which manifests itself as either headache, trembling, nausea, weakness or a general feeling of malise. Look in your natural foods store for products to help balance blood sugar. Some of them are the mineral Chromium, the herbs Licorice & Cinnamon & Gymnema Slyvestre.

Also eating natural peanut butter is found to help prevent blood sugar drop off.

After you’ve overcome the nicotine, herbal cigs can help with those times when you have to be with smoking friends and just crave the “habit” that you associate with good times and good feelings. They don’t have any bad stuff in them but habitually inhaling smoke from anything is not healthy.

John asks…

Honeyrose “Herbal” Cigarettes?

Hey guys! My theater teacher wants me to buy these herbal no tobacco, no nicotine cigarettes on stage live for my performance. He told me to find out whether or not I can smoke them considering I am a minor. I live in California if that makes a difference. If I can’t use these no nicotine no tobacco cigarettes do you have any other ideas that I could use on stage?

THANKS

vti answers:

You still smoke them so if you are illegal for normal cigarettes, you will be illegal for herbals. Honey Rose absolutely stink when smoked too – I personally think they smell 10 x worse than tobacco cigarettes.
The best you can probably do legally is Puff cigarettes like those on the link. Perhaps you could ask to alter the character so smoking doesn’t feature at all.

James asks…

Herbal cigarette smoking?

Im 16 so im a minor. I want to smoke herbal cigarettes and they are illegal to minors in some states but here in texas it isnt. In texas it isnt classified as a cigarette nor is it a a tobacco product. So far it seems legal for me to smoke them. So my question is can you find a law in the texas state code that prohibits the use of a herbal cigarette to a minor. Sec. 154.001. Tax Code, is where it defines a cigarette…

vti answers:

It seems that your are correct. The law outlaws the act of possesses, purchases, consumes, or accepts a cigarette or tobacco product by someone under 18.

The definition of cigarette and tobacco product MUST have tobacco in it.

BUT…..

Under the law, a peace officer can arrest (or ticket) anyone they have probable cause to believe is breaking the law within their presence. So even if you have the pack that says they are herbal smokes, he will have probable cause to believe that you are smoking tobacco. So even though it is legal expect MAJOR PROBLEMS.

David asks…

Valerian Root in herbal cigarette?

I am aware that Valerian Root’s active chemicals are too volatile to be smoked, but I’m wondering if adding a little near the filter/coil tip of a cigarette blended with other smokeable herbs (skullcap, dmania, kava kava, indan warrior, etc) would in effect “vaporize” the valerian’s psychoactive compounds as the hot air and smoke passed through it, at least until the ember got too close.

Would this be feasible or a total waste of time and Valerian?

Also, anything along the lines of ‘omg smoking is bad for you!11!” is going to be ignored. I am quite aware of the carcinogens inherent in ALL smoke, and the risks associated with this are mine to accept. Also, I’m already a marijuana law reform advocate so “just smoke pot lol” will also be ignored. I already do.

vti answers:

It is feasible. Does not mean it will work.

Nothing mentioned is supposed to be smoked. You don’t care about it being bad for you or the risks. Can’t hurt anymore than smoking these other herbs that shouldn’t be smoked.
Just because you call it an herbal cigarette does not mean anything in yours is similar to those manufactured. Smoke up Macaroon!

Health Food Recipes????????

I am turning over a new leaf and I need lots of health food recipes BUT I need them to be rreasonablycheap, easy to make, and taste fantastic. Please I need lots of answers! =]

vti answers:

If you aren’t doing a lot of cooking of fancier foods there are things you can do to adjust what you cook to make it healthier. I like to remove the skin from chicken and trim off as much fat as I can. Then you can bake it in a covered dish after having flavored it with whatever seasoning you choose. Have it breast side down so the fat still in the chicken will keep the breast moist. Grill or broil meat on a rack so that the fat drips off. Don’t put butter on vegetables or do so sparingly. Work at gradually cutting down on salt so you don’t want as much. Meats can be marinated in no fat marinades that give lots of flavor and if you make your own it can have less salt. I believe in using real butter and other real things, not artificial replacements. You learn that you don’t need as much as everybody uses. For baked goods there now a lot of recipes that use other foods such as applesauce for part of the oil and putting foods in for more nutrition. Too much to tell here. Search online for recipes.

Carol asks…

Are health foods and diet foods merely placebos?

Other than being marketing gimmicks. Is their effectiveness attributable to the “Placebo Effect”?

http://www.wired.com/medtech/drugs/magazine/17-09/ff_placebo_effect?currentPage=all

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfRVCaA5o18

vti answers:

Depends what you mean by “Health foods” dunnit? Are fresh nuts and dried fruits far better for your overall health that corn chips and hershey bars>?| Certainly. Are carb laden packaged supplements sold at exhorbitant prices and making outlandish claims for miracle transformations a rip off? Certainly.

Diet foods are all a con. The diet industry would go out of business if they were to make everyone achieve an ideal weight. Diet foods are in fact designed to make you fat and keep you fat, after a brief period pf intial weight loss. That way you come back again next spring and try another product in the hope of being able to get into your bikini again. And after each cycle of dieting you weigh more… With more fat and less lean muscle than you had before…and a more screwed up metabolism.

Lizzie asks…

Counterargument to Fast foods causing health problems.?

So for social studies I chose the topic; Should Canada Ban All fast foods?

I know its ridiculous and what not but I was intrested in it lol 😛

So I need to find counterarguments for 2 reasons. So I agreed that Fast food in Canada should be banned so a Counterargument would be saying that it shouldent be bad because…
So im having troubles on 2 reasons

Reason 1: Fast foods may cause health problems.
Evidence: Fast foods contain large amount of fat, cholesterol and sodium or salt. Consuming too much salt raies your blood pressure, which can lead to heart disease and kidney failure. Too much fat and cholesterol can cause plaque build-up in your arteries. Strokes and heart attacks can occur as a result. These symptoms of heart disease can be fatal and they represent the number-one cause of death in America.
-So what counterargument can I put for this?

Reason 2: Fast food is unhealthy
Evidence: There is nothing nutrional abou fast food. Fast food simply feeds your craving. Fast food is high processed with a wide array of additives, these chemical additives are approved by the FDA(Food Drug Administration) and studies show that they lead to weight and disease issues To ensure fast foods low cost to the consumer, the fast food products are made with highly-processed ingredients to give it shelf-life, to hold consistency and to enhance flavor. Fast food is altered from its original healthy form it was meant to nourish the body with, to a denatured form that lacks any nutrional value whatsoever.
-So again, what counterargument can I use for this reason?

vti answers:

The counter argument is that some items on fast food menus fit your description of being unhealthy and nutritionally deficient, but not everything on the menu. Most fast food establishments include salads, fruit, yogurt parfaits, apple slices, etc. The standard that you are arguing for can be summed up as “Some of the items on their menu are unhealthy so they should all be banned.” Once this precedent is established, then is there any restaurant that can remain in business?

What about the corner bakery? They sell fatty, sugar filled cakes and cookies that have no nutritional value. Should all bakeries be banned? The healthiest thing they offer is bread that is empty starch calories.

What about the grocery store? They sell lots and lots of things that are bad for you, especially if you eat too much of it. Should the grocery stores be banned because they sell butter, cream, sugar, breakfast cereals, twinkies, etc?

There is no way for the government to legislate good decisions. Fast food is a choice for people who want a quick meal at an affordable price. It is only a problem for people who eat too much of it…but that will be a problem at any place that sells or serves food.

Good Luck!

Eye health Foods?

Im taking supplements such as fish oil and teen multivitamin but i was wondering if anyone knew of some good foods for your eyesight. I know this probably sounds like a stupid question but i really care about my eyesight(even though i suffer from astigmatism) but i just want them to be healthy for as long as possible. I have heard foods rich in omega 3’s are good and thats why i eat fish and take fish oil supplements but is their any fruits and veggies that are high in vitamins and minerals especially those critical for good eye health????

vti answers:

Green leafy veggies. Try to get vitamins with Beta Carotene and Lutien. These are fantastic for eye health and can help ward off Macular Degeneration as you age. Try adding ICaps or Vitalux to your daily vitamins. These are the vitamins we dispense at our office.

Good for you for taking a pro-active approach to your eye health! I wish all my patients were like you……wait….I may be out of business then! Good for you! 🙂

Blanched almonds! They are good for you and they really do stop the heartburn! When I was pregnant (many years ago) I kept a package next to my bed and in my purse at all times. Natural Remedies for Dandruff

About.com Health’s Disease and Condition content is reviewed by our Medical Review Board
What is Dandruff?
Dandruff is a common scalp condition marked by white flakes on the scalp and itching.

It appears to be caused by a yeast-like fungus called malassezia, also known as pityrosporum. Malassezia is normally found on the scalp without causing problems, however, if it grows unchecked (possibly due to hormone imbalances, stress, immune suppression, infrequent shampooing, illness, or increased oil production), there is mild inflammation that produces dead skin cells. The dead cells mix with oil and clump together, making them appear white and flaky.

1) Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is an essential oil that comes from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a plant native to Australia. It has been used for centuries as an antiseptic and anti-fungal agent.
There are many tea tree oil shampoos available in health food stores and some drug stores, and many people report these products help with dandruff.

There haven’t been many research studies on tea tree oil for dandruff. One study involved 126 people with mild to moderate dandruff. They used either a five percent tea tree oil shampoo or a placebo daily for four weeks. At the end of the study, the tea tree oil shampoo significantly reduced dandruff. No adverse effects were reported. Although promising, this was not a double-blind study (which means that the researchers knew which participants were using tea tree oil and which were using the placebo), so it cannot be considered solid evidence that tea tree oil works. For more information about tea tree oil, read the Tea Tree Oil Fact Sheet.

2) Apple Cider Vinegar
A home remedy for dandruff is to mix 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar with 1/4 cup water.

Pour this mixture into a spray bottle and spritz it on to your hair and scalp, being careful to avoid the eye and ear area. Wrap your head in a towel.

After 15 minutes to an hour, remove the towel and wash your hair. This is generally done once to twice a week.

3) Biotin
Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin that helps to break down fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. It is sold in supplement form and is also found naturally in foods.

Food sources of biotin are egg yolk, liver, milk, soy, barley, brewer’s yeast, and royal jelly. Biotin is also produced naturally by bacteria in the intestines.

Eating raw egg whites and prolonged use of antibiotics are thought to be causes of biotin deficiency.

Natural remedy for chronic Diarrhoea ?

I have a client who has had chronic diarrhoea for a few months now, and also suffers from Diabetes. He hasn’t had any luck with his GP,so I was wondering if anyone can recommend a safe diet, or natural remedy that may help. At this point the cause is unknown, but the GP suspects a bacterial infection. The client will be seeing an internest but cannot get an appointment until February, so I offered to research possibilities until he can get in.

What do you recommend?

vti answers:

Diarrhoea can strike any of us at any time and for a multitude of reasons. Well, rest assured, homeopathy can provide a wealth of treatment both in the instance of First Aid and also for states of chronic diarrhoea, loose stool and urgency.

Homeopathy is a natural and safe alternative to conventional medicine which is suitable for adults and young children to use. Discovered in the eighteenth century, modern homeopathy has been successfully used by millions of people throughout the world.

Homeopathic treatment of chronic diarrhoea

CROTON TIG.

This is considered by some as one of the best remedies for diarrhoea. The stools are copious and watery, they are passed with a profuse gushing and the material is yellowish – even to the point of looking like yellow water. There is much urging and a lot of gurgling in the intestines before it is passed. The diarrhoea is painful, with much of it being centred in the region of the belly button. The person is generally worse for any food or drink and moving around. If they can, they are better for sleep.

GRATIOLA

This is another gusher! The stool is gushing and watery, like a hydrant. It is often greenish and frothy. It differs from Croton tig. In that the diarrhoea is painless, but there is often burning around the anus after each evacuation. The patient is often worse for eating/drinking and motion, but better for getting some fresh air.

COLOCYNTHIS

This is another common diarrhoea remedy. It has a lot of abdominal pains associated with it; they can be violent, cutting, gripping, grasping, clutching or radiating and colicky. All of the pains come in waves over the person. The patient is often very thirsty. The stools are frothy, watery, yellowish and often passed with a lot of flatulence. The person feels worse for the least food, but better for doubling over clutching the abdomen or rubbing it quite firmly. Gentle motion, perhaps rocking, makes them feel better too.

ARSENICUM ALBUM

This has quite an acute upset stomach picture. The patient is restless, shifting from bed to chair and one position to another. They might be anxious with their illness, chilly and sweaty. There are lots of abdominal pains, but the most characteristic ones of Ars. Alb. Are those of burning pains, in this case the stool burns as it is passed and the rectum/anus burns after a motion. The diarrhoea is characterised by continual trips to the toilet to pass little gushes of stool, often described as rice water (pale, whitish, watery stools).

With this remedy there is usually concurrent vomiting and diarrhoea. In fact I have often prescribed it for a person who feels nauseous with diarrhoea and ten minutes after taking the remedy they throw up, but feel much better for having done so. This is a very good remedy for upset stomachs caused by food that has gone off.

VERATRUM ALBUM

There is great debility with this remedy, the person feels faint or may even faint with the diarrhoea. They are sweaty, chilly and pale. The person requiring Verat. Alb. For their diarrhoea may resemble one requiring Ars. Alb. As described above. In fact it is a handy tip to remember that if you have tried Ars. Alb. And it hasn’t worked then try Veratrum. The stools are often odourless and the pains are usually cramping. There may be lots of nausea and concurrent vomiting. One of the main indicators with this remedy is that the person craves icy cold water, not just water, but icy cold – the only problem is that this can make them feel worse when they have it! They are much better for remaining still and warmth.

GAMBOGIA

The body feels sore all over and the pain is usually of a burning nature, but not just confined to obvious places like the anus, they may feel a burning pain in the eyes or stomach. There may also be pain in the ileo-caecal region (where your appendix is). The actual diarrhoea is very much like that described for Croton tig. A very strange symptom of this remedy that might be seen alongside the diarrhoea is that the urine smells like onions. It is indicated for diarrhoea brought on by hot weather, particularly in the elderly. The patient may feel better or worse for passing a stool.

CHINA

The diarrhoea of this remedy has a lot of wind associated with it. The abdomen is often bloated with gas, this may be trapped or passed easily up or down but the person feels no relief for letting it go. Stools are passed with a lot of gas, spluttering and spraying. They are often yellow, frothy and watery. They smell foul and may also contain undigested food; the stools may also be bloody. Those of you who have travelled abroad and been infected with an intestinal protozoan parasite called Giardia will know these symptoms only too well, consequently this is a good remedy for giardic dysentery.

As the diarrhoea progresses the person may become greatly weakened due to the loss of fluids, they become cold, sweaty and drowsy. The person is worse for touch or examination, noise and pressure on the abdomen. They feel better for bending double and warmth. The symptoms may also show periodicity e.g. The diarrhoea seems to get better then worse on alternate days.

Homeopathic remedy dosage

Select the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms. In conditions where self-treatment is appropriate, unless otherwise directed by a physician, a lower potency (6X tablets or 30C liquid) should be used. In addition, instructions for use are usually printed on the label.

I suggest that remedies be used as follows: Take 2-3 drops of selected remedy in ¼ th glass of water, preferably empty stomached, 3 doses 8 hourly for at least 3 days and wait for a response. If improvement is seen, continue to wait and let the remedy work. If improvement lags significantly or has clearly stopped, another dose may be taken. The frequency of dosage varies with the condition and the individual. Sometimes a dose may be required several times an hour; other times a dose may be indicated several times a day; and in some situations, one dose per day (or less) can be sufficient.

If no response is seen within a reasonable amount of time, select a different remedy.

Does anyone know a natural remedy for headaches?

I get headaches at least 3 times a day. I believe there’s a pinched nerve over my shoulder blade area or something, because that’s where it starts and moves up to my head every time. I’m a walking headache!. I need help, I take too much over the counter pain meds and I’d rather take the natural approach if there’s any available out there…. thank you 🙂

Natural remedies for headaches is peppermint creme and it does work for me sometimes you can rub it on your temples and the back of the neck-i have also heard that lavender oil will do the same thing but i have not tried it personally.
I bought my peppermint creme at bed bath and beyond but i am sure you can find it in other places as well—also drinking peppermint tea is supposed to help but i cant handle the taste of it .

Why are people obsessed with NATURAL remedies and food?

Seriously, I’m wondering why people are obsessed with natural organic things vs chemically enhanced… I see it as organically gave you Chicken pox, Diphtheria, Polio, Black plague, Measles, Tetanus, Yellow Fever, and Smallpox THOSE are natural as well. while injections that aren’t organic or natural at all have cured them all and chemically enhanced products improved the taste of food and are the reason most of us are alive now so Why is everyone obsessed with all natural/organic products on everything it makes no logical sense.
Oh if you say because it hurts the environment can I get the list of researchers that actually did the tests and their notes? I can say eating tomatoes will protect me from a zombie apocalypse but i got no proof of that.
Nice comment however I wasn’t referring to chemically enhanced products curing illness :), I said INJECTIONS which aren’t natural so people are against :P. “THOSE are natural as well. while injections that aren’t organic or natural at all have cured them all” when is it natural or organic for someone to stab themselves and inject something into the blood stream? It doesn’t happen naturally and needles aren’t organic neither are some of the products in the injections.

Natural remedies often have no side effects but unfortunately they are often much slower or less effective than prescription medication.

The problem with prescription medication is that often there are bad side effects.

One typical example is high blood pressure. Whilst natural remedies such as garlic oil, Coenzyme Q10, Hawthorn berry, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, fish oil and many others often help a bit, in most cases you need prescription BP tablets as well as they are usually far more effective but unfortunately they often have bad side effects.

In Prescription For Natural Cures, Balch & Stengler discuss homeopathic remedies, Vitamin C 3-5 grams a day, Nettles 300-500 mg daily, MSM 3-5 grams daily, Quercetin 1000 mg 3 times daily, and Essential Fatty Acids (Flaxseed or Fish oils). There is also good advice on life style and other approaches. Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine (Murray & Pizzorno). Bioflavinoids, esp. Pycnogenol, have also been found to help some people.
Good luck!
