Maria asks…

Whats a natural remedy to get rid of constipation?

vti answers:

My best recommendation is a warm water enema. It always works and only takes a few minutes and doesn’t cause cramping or “accidents” like oral laxatives can. For some people (including me) fiber makes constipation worse. Fiber basically is “stuffing” that fills your colon and forces it out the other end. If you’re already constipated it can make you miserable.

The best prevention is drinking plenty of water. Women should drink at least 8 glasses a day, which is also good for preventing UTI’s.

Helen asks…

What is a home remedy for constipation?

besides the prunes or the distilled water remedy…

vti answers:

If it is a constant problem, then adding fiber to your diet is a must. You can do this by eating more foods rich in fiber (check the nutrition information), or using a supplement (although I know that you are looking for a homeopathic remedy). Fiber One is a good supplement that has no smell or taste and mixes into any food or drink.

Foods rich in fiber are beans, broccoli, spinach, apples, raisins… There are tons.

Good luck!

What are home remedies for constipation?

How can I get rid of constipation at the comfort of my house without going to Dr.

vti answers:

If you are suffering from constipation. Then here is a site for you, I have used them. Its good.

Constipation gives rise to many related diseases because toxins are retained in our body for more time than usual.

If you really want to get rid of constipation naturally once for all, then there is no other remedy which I have used from the following site. It was very helpful for me when I was suffering from constipation. Good Luck.

If you are constipated, you need to act on it now! Constipation causes:

hemorrhoids
anal fissures—tears in the skin around the anus
rectal bleeding
intestinal lining to be pushed out from the anal opening
fecal impaction

Thomas asks…

home remedies for constipation?

need help in going again. Have muscular dystrophy. Cant seem to eat anything that will keep me going. Have done prunes and juice and stool softners. Help

vti answers:

Constipation can be more than just an uncomfortable health issue. It can be defined as a lack of toxin evacuation from the colon that can lead to other more serious, systemic health problems. When toxins are not being eliminated properly, the body seeks alternate pathways to balance its internal chemistry. But these backup systems kicking in can lead to a variety of symptoms appearing that seem completely unrelated to the digestive tract.

There are a variety of traditional home remedies for constipation you can utilize without the help of a doctor.

Exercise

The colon and intestines are muscles, and waste is evacuated by muscle contractions. Therefore, physical movement (i.e. Exercise) is of utmost importance in getting the bowels to perform regularly, especially if your lifestyle is a sedentary one. Exercise is a key home remedy that may encourage the gastrointestinal system to stop being sluggish and start moving. Exercise speeds up many bodily systems, including the colon, and keeps your body working like a well-oiled and efficient machine.

Water

Another traditional home remedy is simply consuming larger quantities of water. Increased water consumption cleanses the digestive system and hydrates the intestines. In the large intestine, water is absorbed from the stool as it passes through the digestive tract. If you don’t consume adequate fluids, your stools will become hard, dry, and difficult to pass. Make it a goal regarding your personal health to drink 8 to10 8-ounce glasses (or roughly 64 ounces) of water throughout the day to help relieve constipation.

Fiber

Add fiber and high-bulk foods to your diet. Fiber, in essence, is food matter that is not digested but acts as a buffer to push waste out of the body. Increased fiber intake is a popular remedy for constipation. Fiber not only pushes waste out of the body, it “scrubs” the walls of the intestines so mucus and uninvited organisms don’t cling to the colon. Some great sources of fiber include: oats, whole ground wheat (not bleached or enriched), ground flax seeds, cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower and broccoli, fiber-rich fruits like apples and pears, and berries embedded with seeds like strawberries and blackberries. Legumes, or beans, are also an excellent source of fiber. Aim for about 25-30 grams of fiber per day to help alleviate constipation.

Beneficial Bacteria

Consume foods rich in beneficial bacteria. These sources of digestion-enhancing bacteria aid with the breakdown of food and with assimilating nutrients into the bloodstream. Bacteria, such as acidodolphus and bifobacterium naturally inhabit the intestinal tract, and aid in the overall functioning of the bowels. Some foods containing these bacteria include: yogurt and kefir, and bacteria-fermented foods like sauerkraut, whey, and unpasteurized apple cider vinegar.

Natural Supplements

Another of the great home remedies for constipation is using a safe, effective supplement to naturally stimulate bowel movements and aid in promoting the intestines. You should be wary of any supplement that works like a laxative, as they frequently contain harsh chemicals or non-organic herbs that could be harmful to intestinal tissue. You should only use products that clean the intestinal walls, promote evacuation of toxins, and encourage a healthy intestinal environment. Oxy-Powder® is a great choice-it’s safe, all natural and works quickly. Oxy-Powder® is not habit-forming, and the dosage can be specifically tailored to your individual needs.

Constipation can be safely and effectively treated through traditional home remedies. Through a combination of regular exercise, drinking more water, maintaining a healthy, fiber-rich diet, or taking advantage of a supplement that safely helps the digestive tract function, you can overcome constipation and begin your journey towards optimal colon health.

What are some home remedies for constipation?

I just got out of school and have stopped drinking as much water and stop exercising. Its only been like 5 days but now when I eat my stomach hurts and I have like intestinal pain. I was told it may be constipation, I started drinking more water and moving around more but do you know any home remidies like olive oil or something I would keep around the house?

vti answers:

You need at least 30 % of Fiber in your diet. You will get the Fiber from 100% Bran from the Cerial. And other from your fruits and vegaetalbles you eat every day. That should take care of it and you should not have a problem with constipation any more. You can use olive oil in your cooking, and Fish Oil is good to have in your diet for yout heart. But the Fiber will take care of your problem.

Maria asks…

Weight loss supplements…?

I’m thinking about trying a weight loss supplement but don’t want the extra energy they give you (I’m really sensitive to caffeine and the like). Are there any weight loss supplements out there that don’t contain any stimulants? If so, which ones work best?

vti answers:

Please do not try diet pills because they are not the long term answer and many can cause negative health effects.

The following healthy living recommendations will help you if you’re trying to lose weight, tone up your muscles, have aspirations of building lean muscle mass, are attempting to get a wash board stomach, or just want to feel better:

*1) Burn more calories then you’re consuming everyday and measure your results using the following formula: Calories Consumed minus Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) minus Physical Activity minus the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF). A website that explains this formula in more detail and will help you determine how many calories you need to reach or maintain a certain weight is at http://www.primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/library/weight/calsburned.htm

Get a diet and fitness calculator that you can put on your computer or cell phone. This will allow you to easily calculate the above formula, set goals, log your daily calorie consumption, and register your physical activities.

Set realistic goals for your ideal body weight. Here are two websites that will calculate a suggested body weight:
Adults: http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm
Teens/Children: http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/exercise/weight/bmi.html

It is difficult and unhealthy to lose more than one or two pounds per week. There are 3,500 calories in a pound. If you eat 500 fewer calories per day for a week you will lose one pound. If you burn through exercise 500 more calories per day for a week you will lose one pound.

*2) Eat natural and organic foods found on earth versus something created by a corporation to make money. Eat meals in small portions throughout the day and take a good multi-vitamin supplement.

Avoid “High Glycemic Load Carbs” (sugar, pastries, desserts, refined starches such as breads, pasta, refined grains like white rice; high starch vegetables such as potatoes) and drink lots of water. Read this article for more information on high GL Carbs:

*3) Exercise on most days by doing cardiovascular training and/or resistance training activities.

Read a book or find a certified trainer to make sure your doing all resistance training exercises correctly. A great book to buy that teaches you the resistance training basics is “Weight Training for Dummies”. A superb magazine to buy with resistance training routines that will not get you bored is “Muscle and Fitness”. Signup for the free newsletter. An excellent free online resource is at http://www.exrx.net/

A good book to buy that teaches you the cardiovascular training basics is “Fitness for Dummies”.

*4) Get plenty of sleep. Sleep experts say most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night for optimum performance, health, and safety.

*5) Educate yourself continually on health issues and make a life long commitment to good health. A great free publication is “Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005”. A superb book to read is “You The Owner’s Manual”. An excellent periodic publication is the “Nutrition Action Health Letter”. A reputable test you can take to measure your biological age is at http://realage.com

Weight loss supplements?

I am a 24 year old stay at home african american mom of two. I’m currently looking for work but haven’t had any luck. I’m 5’4., and i think i weigh between 160 and 175. (all of my weight is concentrated in my hips, thighs, butt and breasts) I don’t consider myself as fat but i am certainly overweight. My target weight is 145 to 150. (want to keep my curves lol) i don’t care to exercise because its just boring. I have the zumba fitness game for the wii but I don’t get time to really get into it because if I’m not chasing my kids around, I’m online looking for a job. So lately I’ve been tempted to buy a weight loss supplement like hydroxycut or something. Don’t get me wrong people, i would exercise if i had a buddy to do it with me, or i planned to take a lil zumba class in between getting off work and picking up the kids from daycare if i had a job. I want to be toned and sexy again lol so will taking those supplements help????

vti answers:

Pills and supplements don’t work. Its as easy as that. Losing weight isn’t easy.

There are many ways to make exercise not boring.
– Brings kids to the park and play with them
– Carry kids around (xD like dumb bells)
– Youtube work out videos
– Find a job you can jog or walk to
– Lesson to music while working out
– Find a workout buddy. I’m 15 and work out with my mom xD Depending on the age of your kids you can do it with them. Though, I’m guess there around three.

Hears some helpful tips for a diet
– buy 1% milk
– try not to eat things like corn syrup or too much sugar
– Fruits and veggies are a no brainier. Fiber is also something good to eat.
– A adverge human eats 2000 calories a day. To lose weight eat around 1200-1500 depending on how fast you want the weight off.

Hope this helped, good luck 😀

John asks…

What is the best weight loss supplement for someone who has trouble losing weight?

I have tried acai berry and colon cleanse combination, hydroxycut, lipozene, metabolife. And while i was on these i either did a 1000 calorie a day diet or weight watchers. I want a fat burner that actually stays true to the title as a fat burner. Im the biggest i have ever been and i need extreme work done

vti answers:

You have tried every unapproved diet pill available at the grocery. Weight loss supplements are called “supplements” because they are not proven drugs. Under a bad law passed in 1994 diet pills, protein powders, oils, even soaps can claim they cause weight loss as long as people don’t report injury or harm. So we don’t find out until injury has occurred before we know if they are safe or not. Quite a big difference from an approved drug that is extensively tested.
80% of weight loss is diet.
You can eat a healthy diet and lose weight.
You can eat a healthy diet and exercise and lose more weight.
You can exercise and eat a poor diet and not lose and even gain weight.
A good healthy diet high in fiber, lean meats, eggs, complex carbohydrates, whole grains, antioxidant foods, healthy beverages and low in added sugar and salt help people lose weight, lower cholesterol, increase energy, improve brain function, lower blood pressure, reduce cancer risk and have a more positive lifestyle!
You need to eat a lot more food and a lot more fiber!
Diets that exclude foods from any food group are fad diets and do not lead to permanent weight loss or solve any other health issues.
First, try to kick your fiber intake to 40 grams of both soluble and insoluble fiber.
Whatever you do, get your fiber from your food, not from a jar.
Fruits and vegetables have good fiber in them. A high fiber diet increases the metabolism.
Try a breakfast cereal with at least 20% of recommended daily allowance of fiber in it. They are usually low in sugar so there is a double benefit. Blueberries or raspberries on top add more fiber and antioxidants. But fresh or frozen, not the kind in syrup.
Raw nuts are a great source of fiber, healthy fats, and antioxidants. Avocados are the best.
Lots of beans, peas, and grains are high fiber. Whole grain breads. Fiber kicks up the metabolism so you actually burn more calories. These foods will give you more gas in the beginning but if eaten daily, the bacteria in the digestive tract will elevate lowering the gas output.
This will get you on the path for a healthy daily bowel movement. This helps clean the system and aids healthy digestion.
I know it goes against everything you’ve heard but eating lots of the right foods will actually help you lose weight!
Next, take an age appropriate basic daily multivitamin. Don’t look at your multivitamin as nutrition but more as an insurance policy. Think of it as filling in the gaps in your daily diet as opposed to a primary source of nutrients.
You have to drink lots of water to be healthy. But you can disguise it. Fill your glass all the way full with ice before pouring low sugar beverages. Try iced green tea with a splash of orange juice in it for sweet. More antioxidants. Add lemon juice to water for flavor. Slice up a cucumber and float it in pitcher of water. Gives it salty fresh taste. But you must drink up to 100 oz of water daily to help your body get rid of waste and the natural toxins.
Last, you need to get 7-10 hours of quality sleep depending on your age. All recent sleep studies report a connection between poor sleep and weight gain.
You must combine a healthy diet with exercise to multiply the benefit. Whether an hour a day in the weight room or just a 30 minute brisk walk every day, the added benefit of a regular exercise program really do increase and accelerate healthy weight loss.

I lost 30 pounds in 5 months by spending my money at the grocery and gym and have kept it off for two years now. 3% of people that attempt weight loss lose it and keep it off for two years. It is not easy. It is a lifestyle change.
Good luck and good health.

David asks…

Weight loss supplement?

I am 24 years old. 6’3, 240lbs. I hit the gym five days a week, running two miles on the treadmill, lifting weights, and usually swimming as well. I ride my bike two and from work, totalling 2.4 miles. I eat healthy, considering my budget, and do not eat sugars, white bread, high fructose corn syrup, etc. Yet I am trying to get down to 225 and cant seem to get there. Please someone help. Is there a supplement I can take that will help or a way to alter my workout. Let me know. Thanks.
I do have a small little gut that I could be rid of….hence the drop to 225 would be solid.

vti answers:

Hi Jesse,
I don’t think that most weight loss pills work. They get you hyped up on stimulants to try and get you to burn more calories. The problem is that often people who take the pills relax on their diet and exercise AND the crash you experience from the pills is equal and opposite from the stimulant high. So basically, while you may be burning a few more calories after you take the pill, you are burning less when it wears off and it all levels out. BUT, if you are really working out hard and you just need a little help I would try the Caffeine Free version of Hydroxicut. All it does is slightly suppress your appetite…it doesn’t claim to burn calories for you. You should have few, if any, negative side effects and it might help you to start losing weight again. I took it for a short time and it did help. Just remember that the pill can’t take the place of hard work…that you need to do yourself.

Good luck with your weight loss goals!

vitamin water and regular vitamins?

Ive recently been drinking alot of vitamin water, is vitamin water more helpful to your body then regular water because it has vitamins such as C,B6,B12, and zinc? im not saying im giving up water, but insted of drinking plain water with a meal should i have vitamin water to get more vitamins then i normally would?
Also, what are some good vitamins i should take as a teenage girl? anything in perticular to help me to loose weight and get my recomended amount of vitamins per day.

THX

vti answers:

Vitamin water is just a way for them to charge more for a bottle of water. It would be much cheaper for you to drink regular water and take a good brand (One a Day, Centrum) of multi-vitamin. Getting more vitamins than is recommened is really a waste. Oh, and the vitamins won’t help you lose weight (you need to diet and exercise), but they will help to improve your overall healt so you will fell like exercising.

Carol asks…

do vitamins have calories in them?

i take vitamin C, E, calcium, vita lea, and Lisene. so do these specific vitamins have calories in them?

vti answers:

No, vitamins have no calories in them.. But u want a vitamin that is water soluble.. This way it can be flushed out if u have too much.. Some vitamins like vitamin E are fat soluble and they can be stored.. Really you do not need alot of vitamin E if u take a multi vitamin and eat well

As well, the calcium, you should take calcium Citrate or calcium magnesium.. It is aborbed so much better then calcium phosphate…

it is also called B-complex vitamins. The Vitamin B Complex are actually a group of eight vitamins and four unofficial supplements.

Sandy asks…

what is b12 vitamin do?

what is b12 vitamins for ?

vti answers:

Vitamin B12 helps support energy but does not provide it. For example, if you take a B12 supplement without calories, you’re not going to get the boost of energy because that’s not what it provides, just what it support, like other B Vitamins. Also, you need Vitamin B12 to make red blood cells which carry oxygen to your body. A deficiency leads to anemia which makes you feel tired, weak, have pale skin, can cause constipation and diarrhea, etc. Most people do not have a problem with Vitamin B12 unless they are vegan or have impaired absorption because it stays in your system so long. Elderly could also have a problem. Some people may have to get B12 shots, not because they don’t consume it but because their body doesn’t absorb it as readily.

Thomas asks…

Foods with vitamin B12?

What foods have vitamin B12?

vti answers:

You may have heard of people taking vitamin B-12 supplements of shots. Do you need to take supplements, and are the shots truly of value?

We need vitamin B-12 for red blood cell production, a healthy nervous system, and to prevent anemia. Vitamin B-12 is also needed for the production of DNA.

Many weight loss clinics are prescribing B-12 shots, but most doctors do not believe this improves weight loss efforts. If you think your might be B-12 deficient, ask your doctor for a test; most people have stored enough B-12 to last them for years. While a vitamin B-12 shot may help you if you are truly anemic or deficient (which can be determined by a blood test), it will not improve your metabolism or make your more energetic if you are already getting enough vitamin B-12. Ask your doctor before you start taking vitamin B-12 shots or taking large doses of supplements, because too much B-12 can interfere with the effectiveness of particular medications.

Most people get plenty of vitamin B-12 if they regularly eat animal products. Most Americans get plenty of vitamin B-12 in their diet simply by eating milk, eggs, meat, shellfish, and fortified products. The people who need to worry are vegans–those who don’t eat meat, eggs, or dairy products. However, if vegans eat fortified cereals, they probably aren’t at high risk of deficiency.

If you get between 2.6-2.8 micrograms of vitamin B-12 a day, you’re probably getting enough. Just one cup of milk plus a suggested serving of fortified cereal can meet your vitamin B-12 needs for the day. If you have a deficiency, you probably have a problem absorbing B-12 or using the B-12 that your body has already stored. This may happen if the intestinal wall is not absorbing B-12 or if there is a problem with the body releasing B-12 that was previously absorbed. In most cases, people store vitamin B-12 for years, meaning deficiency is unusual.

Laura asks…

What age are we in…?

Like.. stone age, atomic age, iron age, industrial age, etc…
What era, if you don’t understand

vti answers:

I would say the information age. People say space age, but honestly, information has a much much much greater effect on our lives than space does. You might say, well satellites are important so it is the space age. But satellites are only important because they allow us to spread information. Certainly, the ability to spread information globally (internet, televisions, books, movies, phone calls, people, …) is the most defining difference between our age and all the past ages. When you go to bed tonight, I want you to think which was more important to you today… Neil Armstrong landing on the moon or William Shockley inventing the transistor. If you typed on the computer or made a cell phone call or watched television or drove a car built in the last 20 years or bought anything at a store, today, then I think you will agree, the transistor was more important. If you just got back from the moon, then maybe you will disagree. But I would say we will not enter the space age until space become the defining characteristic of our society, and I don’t think we are there yet.

Mary asks…

The Dark Ages or Middle Ages?

Is the Dark Ages a time period in the Middle Ages or is it just another name for Middle Ages?

vti answers:

The term Dark age was originally used by the Italian scholar Petarch (sp) who lived in the 14th century. It was used to describe the period between the fall of the western Roman empire to the Renaissance period(loosly starting about 1100)
His view were there were three ages .1st was the classical period in which he meant the time both of Greek and Roman culture and knowledge followed by the dark age (hence the middle age) where there was little culture or science and finally the Renaissance .Although I do not speak Latin I do speak French and based on my knowledge of French I think probably means rebirth.
He meant the term in a derogatory way

Later Historians and Scholars used the term to refer to the fact that there was little recorded history of that period so little was known of that time..But as time and science have moved on we know far more about the peoples of that time now.
It is really only used by movie makers now when making films that blur myth and fact of the time because it has a better ring to it than middle age .

P.S When I say the Renaissance period started around 1100 I am refering to when Petrach considered the period to begin. It is considered by historians today to have began in the late 13th Century ,But Petarch is hardly going to say he is living a cuturally backward period .

Maria asks…

what are some ages of history?

Like the Stone Age, the Iron Age, Steam Age, etc – Is there any accepted general chronology of ages of mankind?

vti answers:

Yes. The three age system has been firmly established: Stone, Bronze and Iron Age.
Some ages are are not specifically called that and some others have been renamed/discredited. One fine example of a discredited “age” is the Dark Ages. This age succeeded the Iron Age. Seems like a nice flow right? Well, you would be wrong. There was not much darkness during the “Dark Ages”. As a matter of fact, there is no longer such a thing as the “Dark Ages”, at least not amongst medieval historians. The term “Dark Ages” was coined during the Victorian Era (well get to this one in a minute) and it was called so because scholars did not have that much sources to really understand that period of time, so they called it dark because, one they did not know too much about it and 2 because it seemed like a backward society compared to the Victorian one (who believed they were the pinnacle of society.

Now we do have periods of time called eras. Eras are much more precise than the word age because it is not very clear when there is a transition between these ages, we can say what caused the change but we cannot really pin point the exact date of transition. Era’s on the other hand can be more clearly defined. Examples are Victorian and Edwardian eras, both begin by the coronation of a monarch and end with their deaths. We cannot be more precise than that. Both are accepted terminologies.
There is also our age, the Digital Age.

John asks…

What are the anti aging ingredients?

I want to know the anti aging ingredients. I am over 35 years of age and I have used quite a number of anti aging cosmetics. Just out of curiosity, I was wondering what anti aging ingredients I should look for in most of these products. I mean the anti aging ingredients that make these products work effectively.

vti answers:

Most anti aging products contain similar anti aging ingredients but a few contain one or two anti aging ingredient the other might not have. Certain products contain a particular anti aging ingredient that makes their products more effective.
It is always good to look out for a particular anti aging ingredient in a product before purchase especially for anti aging ingredients that are more effective. Most people make the mistake of purchasing an anti aging product without knowing what anti aging ingredient it contains. Sometimes a product might contain an anti aging ingredient that your body might react to.
Resveratrol is an active anti aging ingredient I know of. It is gotten from red grapes and it is very active in combating wrinkles and signs of aging. Certain products contain resveratrol like dermology 3-part anti aging formular. Resveratrol makes the product efficient when it comes to combating aging and wrinkled skin and other damaged skin conditions. Dermology comprises of an anti aging cream, anti aging serum and anti aging eye cream and resveratrol is an active anti aging ingredient in all three. You will learn more about this product and more here: http://www.look-younger-now.info

What is hollywood nights herbal incense?

I’ve been hearing a lot about this. People say it’s “legal bud”.

Can someone explain?

Thanks

vti answers:

Well, I haven’t heard of Hollywood Nights.
However, a lot of Herbal Incenses do work. To me, there’s a difference between “legal buds” and “herbal incenses” —
Herbal incenses work. Legal buds don’t. To keep certain incenses from being outlawed, though, I’m going to stop there.

If you would like an exclusive list of products that I know work or to know a little more about the details on a lot of herbal incenses, feel free to shoot me an email. 🙂

David asks…

Are there health food stores in India?

Health food stores where you can find organic foods or pure supplements
like vitamin D and C. If there are health food stores, what are they like, what type of health foods are they geared towards….do they they offer herbs and whole foods? Thanks you so much! I am possibly moving to India in a year or so and I m trying to find out how difficult it will be to maintain my healthy lifestyle habits. I’ll be asking all sorts of questions about India so I may reduce culture shock! Knowledge is power, yeah? Things will be easier and better ad more relaxing if I know what it will be like (even the small stuff) so look out for some pretty silly sounding questions…hehehe…..

vti answers:

Hi there Arti…well you are asking the question I’ve spent years myself trying to answer.
I also live in India as a ‘foreigner’.
I live near Delhi so most of my searching for Health food shops has been in Delhi.
What I am noticing after 12 years since I first came here is that India is either getting educated about organics more now or else one could say, going back to their roots.
By that I mean that things are really simple in India and always were, the foods were organic and so forth, there are herbs from which Ayurvedic doctors make their medicines, but India followed the west. They got tractors instead of bullock driven ploughs (well some still use them of course because they can’t afford tractors.) And they got pesticides and herbicides etc
The first health food shop I came in contact with was …can’t remember its name right now, something like ‘Good foods’ or ‘Good earth”
They are not really our western style of health food shop. Not strictly vegetarian even cause they bake cakes and breads with eggs in them. Basically they just have a few good things. (You can write to me personally if you want to discuss more)
Then I found one in Kolkatta with organic grains from the Himalayas and a few organic veges, and a few healthy things. They also have ‘meat’ in the freezer, “shock horror”.
Hey Hindus are supposed to be vegetarians!
Then I heard about some better ones in Bangalore and surely there would be something in Mumbai though maybe not much worth writing home about.
But then ….enter “Fabindia”… Well I’m impressed by this shop. They have beautiful everything. Organic grains and some other stuff and beautiful cloth- clothes, linen etc. They have a nice muesli and cashew butter too. And they have branches in about 20 cities in India.
They have a website too.
Then there are import stores that have many ‘overseas’ things like olive oil and pasta and a few herb tea bags. They also import fruit and veges. They are expensive though.
There are now many more organic growers in India and ‘Fabindia’ is sponsoring them and encouraging them.
I can get Avacados where I live, don’t know if they are organic, but I’m not in a big city where they are usually found in select shops only.our
Vitamins here arn’t as good as in the west. Bring your own and have others mailed to you.
Hope I’m helping and not discouraging you.
Where are you moving to in India?
Come and visit us!

Daniel asks…

any good health food stores?

anyone know any health food stores in the uk? ive tried holland and barratt but they dont have a very good selection so any others?

thanks
x
i dont want supplements or vitamins, im looking for actual food.

vti answers:

There is a store called whole foods, they have great healthy food among other things 🙂 here is the website http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/ if u go under stores and events the uk is listed 🙂 Hopefully u find it of some use! Enjoy!

Michael asks…

What are some really great health food stores in the area?

Looking into trying a vegan/organic diet. Need to search out some new stores that may carry products not carried in regular supermarkets.

vti answers:

All those people answering Whole Foods clearly didn’t see this is listed under Halifax…there’s no Whole Foods here. Planet Organic on Quinpool is good as is Super Natural Health Products on Young, near the Hydrostone. Heartwood Cafe is good for vegans if you’re looking to go out for dinner. Satisfaction Feast is good, but just vegetarian.

John asks…

What is the best organic, health food store?

Let me start out with saying, I’m really particular about what I eat. I don’t drink anything but water, stay away from ice cream, donuts, chocolate etc. Not because I dislike them I just feel disgusting after I eat them. But anyway what is the best organic health store? I eat a lot of whole grains, pasta, veggies, fruit, yogurt, nuts, beans and lots of protein and fiber. I’m also vegetarian. I was thinking of switching to Whole Foods for my shopping…is there a place better than that? Thanks(:

vti answers:

Most grocery stores sell organic foods now. Since you didn’t mention what area you live in I can’t really suggest anything but Whole Foods.

Mandy asks…

Do you buy your vitamins online or in the health food store or at grocery store?

Is the quality all the same no matter where you buy them?

vti answers:

Health Food Store and the quality is all the same!

Richard asks…

What type of dry dog food is good for a papillon puppy?

I want to adopt a papillon puppy and I read that Pedigree, Iams, and Purina are not good to give to dogs because they don’t have the nutrition that both puppies and dogs need. What type of dry dog food is healthy and safe for them?

vti answers:

Feeding your dog holistic (natural) foods is the best choice. These foods are more easily digested and absorbed by the dog, which translates to less food consumed and less poo. After researching extensively on dog foods and trying out a few, I would recommend Wellness or Solid Gold. Buy the dry food for puppies and it’ll work wonders! I wouldn’t feed my new puppy anything else.

Jenny asks…

Gravy train dog food?

i can either get gravy train or purina regular dog food. Witch one is better? i know my dog likes gravy train better, but is purina better?
Also recomend the cheapest GOOD dog food.

vti answers:

Purina is certainly better than Gravy Train, but really? Both are crappy quality dog foods. Sorry, ‘cheap’ and ‘good’ don’t belong in the same sentence. There’s no such thing as a cheap, good dog food.

Not all pet food is made equally. A lot of it is full of corn, by-products, dyes, unhealthy preservatives, filler grains and all sorts of nasty stuff. A lot of pet food companies are perfectly happy to the dump cheap leftovers and things that aren’t safe for human consumption (from human food processing plants) into their foods. Will it kill your dog? No, it has to be nutritionally complete and safe to even be marketed. Is it healthy? Not by a long shot.

Corn is a low quality ingredient you never want to see in your pet food. Corn and low quality grains are two of the biggest culprits when it comes to food allergies in our pets.

Thankfully, there are some excellent dog foods being made these days that include organic, human grade ingredients rather than trash not fit for human consumption.

Examples of low quality foods to avoid: Anything you can find in a grocery store will be low end, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Pedigree, Kibbles n’ Bits, Beneful, Ol’Roy.

Examples of high quality foods to look for: Wellness, Solid Gold, Canidae All Life Stages, Fromm Four Star, Merrick, GO Natural, Nature’s Variety Prairie, Nature’s Logic, Artemis Fresh Mix, Timberwolf Organics.

Although the high quality foods are more expensive, you’re getting what you’re paying for. Less filler material and higher quality ingredients means more concentrated nutrients… This means you typically need to feed far less of the high quality food than you would of the low quality one. Which also means less poop!

Seriously on a budget? Two of the most affordable of the higher quality foods would be Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul and Canidae All Life Stages.

Before following your vet’s food recommendation, keep in mind that vets get /very/ little nutritional training during their schooling. Besides that, what training they /do/ get is usually sponsored or taught by… You guessed it, biased, low end pet food companies! They also often get kickbacks from the companies for pushing their products at their clinics (Science Diet, Royal Canin etc.)

A great option is to go with an entirely grain-free diet. Many of the high quality foods now put out grain-free formulas. Some good grain-free diets include: Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness, Nature’s Variety Instinct, Orijen, Horizon Legacy, Canidae Grain Free All Life Stages, Fromm Surf & Turf, Now!, Sold Gold Barking At The Moon, Ziwipeak, and Taste of the Wild.

Some pretty decent foods can even be found in common pet stores. Petsmart carries Blue Buffalo products (such as the excellent grain-free diet, Blue Wilderness). Petco carries Wellness, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack Holistic Select, Blue Buffalo, Castor & Pollux Organix, Pinnacle, and Halo.

If you can’t find a food, most of the high quality dog food brands have websites with store locators on them that will help you find the store closest to you which supplies their products. Simply type the dog food brand’s name into Google, go to their website, and type your zip code into their store locator.

Another option, if you can’t find anywhere around you that sells good foods, is to order your pet food online. Here’s an excellent place to do so: http://www.petfooddirect.com/store/

Remember that foods should be switched gradually (mixing the new slowly in with the old over the period of about week or so), especially when switching to a higher quality one, so as not to upset tummies. For example:
Days 1 & 2: 75% old food, 25% new food
Days 3 & 4: 50% old food, 50% new food
Days 5 & 6: 25% old food, 75% new food
Day 7: 0% old food, 100% new food

Another option for feeding dogs is to feed raw. This is something that should be thoroughly researched before being attempted:
http://www.rawfed.com/ (RawFed)
http://www.rawlearning.com/ (Jane Anderson’s Raw Learning Site)
http://rawfeddogs.net/ (Raw Fed Dogs)
http://www.rawmeatybones.com/ (Raw Meaty Bones)

http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/rawfeeding/ (Raw Feeding)
http://www.rawfed.com/myths/index.html (Myths About Raw Feeding)

Also remember that freefeeding (leaving food down) is the fast lane to canine obesity. Make sure to have scheduled feeding times loosely based on the feeding guidelines on your dog’s food. Adult dogs are typically fed two meals a day while puppies are typically fed three or four.

Charles asks…

Is Natural Balance Holisitic dog food?

whats the difference between holistic and organic dog food?

vti answers:

Holistic food is the only way to go these days as all the commercial foods are poisoning our dogs . Please go with holistic better for the dog .

Chris asks…

holistic dog food…?

My wife and I just got a husky puppy and I am having a difficult time finding a good brand or food type to feed it. Right now we are giving him store bought dry food, but I want to get him off of it ASAP. I am a scientist and have working knowledge of chemistry, so I know how to read labels and also understand some of the dangers associated with chemicals in dog food. We went to the store and I read the labels of every brand and food type and they all had about 80-90% of the same ingredients, and the difference was usually different types of preserving chemicals as well as different mixtures of lipids. If that wasn’t bad enough, the way in which they process and render dog food ingredients makes the nutritional value of the ingredients decline, and makes the absorption rate far less efficient giving us a product which can promote the creation of free radicals as well as an undernourished diet.
Raw food diet is out of the question, since domesticated animals have lost some of its genetic capacities to 100% inherit the physiological properties that allowed dog ancestors to eat and digest raw food.

So, my question is aimed to any responsible and knowledgeable dog owner out there who has found a good and cost effective way to feed their dog.
What do you feed? How much do you feed? Why do you feed what you feed? What kind of animal do you own?

Thank you, and apologies for the lengthy introduction.
@Giagal: just read the ingredients of pro plan. same as all the other brands and has free form vitamins
@walking lady: Im not saying they can’t digest it, they just can’t digest it as efficiently as their ancestor and there are helth and infection risks associated with raw meat due do genetic variation. Some dogs can’t fight certain kinds of bacteria found in raw meat, and even though the probability is low, and in my opinion bacteria from raw meat is far more deadly than long time exposure to chemicals

vti answers:

I feed my puppy Blue Buffalo puppy food and my adults Blue Wilderness. It doesnt have any by products, corn, wheat, soy, artificial colorings or any of that junk. The wilderness kind has no grains and is mainly a meat based diet so that’s why I use it. How much you feed just depends on age, breed, and size. I love this food ever sense I changed to this brand my dogs have been so healthy, muscular, and have shiney coats. I have German Shepherds and a Chihuahua so it meets the nutritional needs for both. Plus they love it lol.

Thomas asks…

The great dog food debate?

When did it start? Who started it? Why was it started? It seemed to come out of nowhere. I am feeding my dogs a food I have fed for over 25 years and all of the sudden it is ‘crap’ food. And all the other dog foods such as Purina, SD, Iams etc. are now being called crap when there was a time they were considered good dog foods.

So when and who started this? Who said wheat gluten, corn etc was harmful to dogs and how was it proved?

Where can you find an unbiased site? I do not understand the why more than anything else.

I just realized it out of the blue about 2 years ago the dog food I have fed was now considered junk. And I still do not understand who started this. The holistic dog food companies?

I need some intelligent answers.
Edit: So what I am getting so far is education on what a dog needs in a food has become more evident. Do you think the dog food makers such as SDiet really believe their food is good?
I am getting some very informative answers that are making a lot of sense. I had no idea dog food was not regulated. That is my own ignorance. Also, I do believe now when I think back on the diseases I fought with some of my dogs, it could have very well been the food. I cannot punish myself for that but I can certainly use the intelligence and education from other people and make a good change to a better food.

And yes, I do believe SD and Purina have huge advertising budgets and when you really think about how much a 40 lb bag of SD costs and what SD puts in their food they are making massive amounts of money.
Bindi, great info. And you are right. That is what I am looking for. What is bad in the bad food. Very informative.

Chetco: That is what I am changing to. Canidae. I have tried Solid Gold, Wellness and 2 other high quality foods. It was all too rich for my gang. So, the Canidae seems to be working for me and my gang.
Oh my gosh. I have gone into the websites everyone posted. I am completely in shock. I had no idea. Why in the world is there not regulation for dog food? Does anyone thing this is not getting done because, I hate to say this, the less sick dogs we have the less money a vet is going to make?
Thank you Joh. I am getting so many intelligent answers I am copying all of this and putting it together to give out to my friends who feed their dogs garbage and the new dog owners who don’t have a clue. I don’t think I could get better information than from everyone who has contributed on this site.

A bunch of very informed people. Thank you.

This debate goes back nearly 30 years, at least for one veterinarian named Tom Lonsdale. He graduated veterinary school in 1972 and followed “traditional” nutrition practices. But after several years of practice the dangers of processed foods started to be evident.

While advances in veterinary medicine have grown in leaps and bounds, our pets health has gone downhill. That doesn’t make sense does it?

Most of the problems our face such as poor dental health, kidney and liver problems, allergies, and more can be linked back to the wide spread use of kibble. Kibble has been around awhile but has only been in widespread use for about 60 years. Before that dogs ate scraps and hunted for themselves.

Dog food companies are good at marketing, and convincing us that we aren’t qualified to feed our own pets.

Did you know that pets who are fed nothing but dry kibble their whole lives are in a constant state of dehydration? This has a huge impact on the kidneys and liver. They weren’t ment to eat dried pellets.

Cooking foods also changes the proteins in them. You might think the change isn’t that great, but the change made by cooking is so great that dogs allergic to a protein source in its cooked form, do fine with the same protein in its raw form.

But I digress, I don’t think you were asking for a debate between commerical and raw, you were looking for information on high quality vs. Low quality and what makes a food high or low quality.

The thing to remember is that the most common foods, SD, Purina, Iams etc. Have large marketing budgets. They are everywhere. SD teaches nutrition classes to vet students, and has a good number of programs to give perks to vets, vet students, and vet schools. When something is shoved in your face all the time, you tend start believing it.

Also most major dog food companies are owned by companies that produce “human” food. The waste from the human food sections of the company get shipped over the pet food departement. While these companies say they are studying nutrition it appears that they are studying the cheapest ingredients they can throw in a food that won’t make the pet fall over dead, at least not right away. They are basically using our pets as their garbage disposal and we pay them big bucks for it.

We know by looking at the dogs teeth and digestive system that they are carnivores. Why then are most commercial foods comprised mostly of corn and other plant based things?

A quality food is defined by its ingredients. Quality foods contain mostly meat, not corn. Ideally a commercial food should have meat as at least its first three ingredients. All kibbles will have some plant matter in them, its needed to bind the food into those little kibble pieces. But some are better than others, rice and potato are good binding agents. A quality food also will not use chemical preservatives, especially those known to be linked to cancer. These include BHA, BHT, and Ethoxyquin.

Ethoxyquin is probably one of the worst and has been banned for use in human foods, it is also a component in your tires. *Yummy*

Do makers of foods like SD think there food is good? Maybe, but I have heard that some people employed by SD won’t feed it to their own pets. There is also a Purina Pro Plan rep on YA, but I have yet to see her comment on a dog food related question.

I don’t think this whole thing started with the recalls a couple years ago, it was going on long before that. What the recalls did do though was make more people aware of what’s going in their pets.

But Purina foods DID TEST POSITIVE for pento. In the study. Someone else got that confused too. Remember ProPlan is a Purina food, 3 out 4 Proplan foods tested, tested positive.

Purina is owned by Nestle, who also owns Alpo, Mighty Dog, and the entire Purina line of dog foods including Dog Chow, Puppy Chow, Proplan, and Beneful to name a few.

Hi be happy .

Am sorry to hear about your infection but it is always good to get medical attention. However, you can take care of this infection on your own. It will require a trip to your local health food store and buy some items. Also you will need to change you diet for a limited time. Once you follow this, you will get rid of the infection and also candida ( yeast ) over-growth in your body:

1. Choose cotton underwear and do not wear tight trousers (Moulds love warm, dark spaces with limited airflow).
2. Avoid damp environments where airborne moulds are ever-present.
3. Exercise everyday to relieve stress. Aerobic exercise is especially useful in treating candida as Candida and other fungi do not thrive in a high-oxygen environment. Also, fresh air and regular exercise have a positive effect on immunity.
4. Cut all foods containing yeast including bread, pizza, crackers, pastries, muffins, mushrooms and ferments like soy sauce, cheese, tomato paste, beer and vinegar.
5. Avoid refined carbohydrates as they are known to have a depressant effect on the immune system.
6. Get organic coconut oil which cost about $5-7 dollars from a health food store and take 2 tablespoons of it every morning. It will help give relief from the inflammation caused by yeast (candida), externally and internally to your body.
7. Get apple cider vinegar RAW. I would recommend the one from a company called Bragg’s which is about $6 dollars. Take 2 tablespoons of it the moment you wake up from bed and before you go to sleep. It helps encourage the growth of healthy bacteria, which in turn minimizes the overgrowth of candida and balances your body’s pH level.
8. Eat lots of leafy Green Veg’s every time you are hungry.
9. Get probiotics supplement which cost about 20-30 dollars. Use as directed
10. AVOID ALL SUGAR BASED FOODS

This will starve the candida and reduce you inflammation so the when you see the doctor on the 11th he will be able to help you recover more quickly. But please this will require effort on your part and since you did take action by seeking help I know you can do what i suggested above . I can tell you from personally experience that this WORKS because I have done this myself

No home remedies will help. The only thing to do is call a gyno. I have mistaken baceterial infections for yeast infections many times and monistat, etc. Could cause a bacterial to get worse. Just call your gyno.
