There is no food that is the *best*, different individual dog may thrive on different foods. What is best for one may not be the best for the next. And just because a food is good quality, it doesn’t mean it will jive the best for your dog.

What you want to find is the HIGH-QUALITY food that *your dog* does best on.

Read the ingredients before you buy. Go with a high-quality dog food.

Here is my “short list” of rules when I am looking at dog food ingredients:
1) When I chose a dog food, I chose one high meat content. I want to see preferably at least 2-3 out of the top 5 ingredients be meat or meat meal (first ingredient must be!). Meal is simply the meat with the moisture removed.
2) I want to see higher quality grains, such as barley, brown rice, and oatmeal, instead of seeing wheat and corn. Or an alternative starch/carbohydrate such as potatoes or sweet potatoes.
3) I don’t want to see any byproducts.
4) I don’t want to see a lot of fillers.
5) I don’t want to see preservatives that are believed to be carcinogens (BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin).
6) I don’t want to see artificial colorings such as the Red, Blue, and Yellow dyes.
7) I don’t want to see added sugars (sugar, corn syrup).
8) I don’t want to see mystery meats (meats identified only as “meat” or “poultry”.)

Here is an article about byproducts:

And an article on what ingredients to avoid:

Higher quality food may seem more expensive at first, but it evens out. The higher quality the food, the less fillers eaten (and therefore the less poop comes out the other end). Your dog eats more of a low-quality food to try to get the nutrition it needs, and most of the food just passes right on through. Also, higher-quality food will make your animals healthier, so you save money on vet bills in the long run.

What *NOT* to buy:

Stay away from grocery stores brands. They are low-quality foods chalk full of fillers, preservatives, dyes, etc.. (Grocery store foods are those like Beneful, Old Roy, Alpo, Pedigree, Purina, etc.)

Beware “premium” foods. “Premium” does not always mean good nutritionally, and is not a nutritionally high quality food. Most of these foods have the same types of ingredients as grocery store foods, just a bit better quality of those not-so-good ingredients. (Premium foods are those like Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Bil-Jac, Royal Canin, etc..)

Another thing to be wary of: A lot of vets will recommend what they sell in their office. They get profit from the brands they keep on their shelves, that’s why they push it. Truth is, vet schools don’t focus a lot on nutrition. It’s not saying that a vet is a bad vet because he recommends those foods, a lot of vets just are told “this is good food”, so they pass the message along without proper nutrition knowledge. Also, some dog food brands (like Hills) support vet schools, so vets have heard of it from the time they start college, which makes them think it’s good as well.

Hills company, the makers of Science Diet, are heavily involved in vet schools. “Hill’s scientists author more than 50 research papers and textbook chapters each year and teach at leading schools of veterinary medicine” (Source of quoted section: http://www.hillsvet.com/zSkin_2/company_info/company_info_general.jsp?JSESSIONID=HMz2B3Jn3hv0rnSoxCobfbBhOec35ODG7yh5t3P0vcvhOtzRlQ9M!598359213!167846923!7005!8005&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302026072&bmUID=1196192566575 )

“Big box” petstores like Petco and Petsmart rarely have quality foods. (I do believe that PetCo sells “Solid Gold” and “Natural Balance” brands and Petsmart sells “Blue Buffallo”, which are all higher quality foods, but most of the foods aren’t.)

Also, grocery stores and Walmart aren’t good places to buy food either.

Your best bets for getting quality dog food are:
– small, locally owned petstores
– dog boutiques
– farm supply stores

When switching foods, do it gradually. I do this over about a two week timespan:
25% food A, 75% food B
50% food A, 50% food B
75% food A, 25% food B
100% food A

George asks…

Dog food ?

How long will this dog food last for a small breed puppy that is about 3-9 pounds?

The 20 pound bag:

An approximate is great.
Thanks ! (:

vti answers:

In my house, it would last about 30 seconds before I threw it in the trash.

A 5 pound bag of high-quality puppy/dog food with no fillers will last a small breed puppy about a 3-4 weeks I estimate. (That’s for an adult dog, a puppy will generally eat more than an adult.) I don’t really pay attention to how often I buy food, I just buy it when I’m running low.

Here are some GREAT, HIGH-QUALITY puppy foods:

Merrick Puppy Plate –

Chicken Soup Puppy –

Artemis Small breed puppy –

Blue Buffalo puppy –

If you’re on a budget, the Chicken Soup and Canidae brands are probably your best bets. Those are very reasonably priced foods.

Helen asks…

What is the best organic dog food?

I currently feed my dogs Sceince diet sensitive skin, but have been thinking about changing to an orgainc food. Which is the best brand?
Thanks for the great info. I have tried Blue Buffalo sweet potato and white fish, but my boxer hates the little black bits and quit eating it all together. I have been feeding sceince diet for about three years now and it did help with the food allergy, but they tend to have loose stools sometimes and it gives one of them bad breath.

vti answers:

You don’t need organic, you just need a high quality food. Science Diet is crap.

Not all pet food is made equally. A lot of it is full of corn, by-products, dyes, unhealthy preservatives, filler grains and all sorts of nasty stuff. A lot of pet food companies are perfectly happy to the dump cheap leftovers and things that aren’t safe for human consumption (from human food processing plants) into their foods. Will it kill your dog? No, it has to be nutritionally complete and safe to even be marketed. Is it healthy? Not by a long shot.

Corn is a low quality ingredient you never want to see in your pet food. Corn and low quality grains are two of the biggest culprits when it comes to food allergies in our pets.

Thankfully, there are some excellent dog foods being made these days that include organic, human grade ingredients rather than trash not fit for human consumption.

Examples of low quality foods to avoid: Anything you can find in a grocery store will be low end, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Pedigree, Kibbles n’ Bits, Beneful, Ol’Roy.

Examples of high quality foods to look for: Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Canidae All Life Stages, Fromm Four Star, Merrick, GO Natural, Nature’s Variety Prairie, Nature’s Logic, Artemis Fresh Mix, Timberwolf Organics.

Although the high quality foods are more expensive, you’re getting what you’re paying for. Less filler material and higher quality ingredients means more concentrated nutrients… This means you typically need to feed far less of the high quality food than you would of the low quality one. Which also means less poop!

Seriously on a budget? Two of the most affordable of the higher quality foods would be Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul and Canidae All Life Stages.

Before following your vet’s food recommendation, keep in mind that vets get /very/ little nutritional training during their schooling. Besides that, what training they /do/ get is usually sponsored or taught by… You guessed it, the crappy pet food companies! They also often get kickbacks from the companies for pushing these products at their clinics (Science Diet, Royal Canin etc.)

A great option is to go with an entirely grain-free diet. Many of the high quality foods now put out grain-free formulas. Some good grain-free diets include: Innova EVO, Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness, Nature’s Variety Instinct, Orijen, Horizon Legacy, Canidae Grain Free All Life Stages, Fromm Surf & Turf, Now!, GO Natural Grain Free, Sold Gold Barking At The Moon, Ziwipeak, and Taste of the Wild.

Some pretty decent foods can even be found in common pet stores. Petsmart carries Blue Buffalo products (such as the excellent grain-free diet, Blue Wilderness). Petco carries Wellness, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack Holistic Select, Blue Buffalo, Castor & Pollux Organix, Pinnacle, and Halo.

If you can’t find a food, most of the high quality dog food brands have websites with store locators on them that will help you find the store closest to you which supplies their products. Simply type the dog food brand’s name into Google, go to their website, and type your zip code into their store locator.

Another option, if you can’t find anywhere around you that sells good foods, is to order your pet food online. Here’s an excellent place to do so: http://www.petfooddirect.com/store/

Remember that foods should be switched gradually (mixing the new slowly in with the old over the period of about week or so), especially when switching to a higher quality one, so as not to upset tummies. For example:
Days 1 & 2: 75% old food, 25% new food
Days 3 & 4: 50% old food, 50% new food
Days 5 & 6: 25% old food, 75% new food
Day 7: 0% old food, 100% new food

Another option for feeding dogs is to feed raw. This is something that should be thoroughly researched before being attempted:
http://www.rawfed.com/ (RawFed)
http://www.rawlearning.com/ (Jane Anderson’s Raw Learning Site)
http://rawfeddogs.net/ (Raw Fed Dogs)
http://www.rawmeatybones.com/ (Raw Meaty Bones)

http://community.livejournal.com/rawdogs/profile/ (Raw Dogs Livejournal Community, excellent raw feeding information on the profile page and overall helpful community for raw feeding questions)
http://www.rawfed.com/myths/index.html (Myths About Raw Feeding)

Also remember that freefeeding (leaving food down) is the fast lane to canine obesity. Make sure to have scheduled feeding times loosely based on the feeding guidelines on your dog’s food. Adult dogs are typically fed two meals a day.

More on dog food:

http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/ (Dog food reviews. Four stars is a decent food, five stars is a great food, and six stars is an excellent food.)

Edit: LOL Salt&Pepper. That’s a good one. Yup, a food made up primarily of corn is /totally/ equal to a food made up primarily of meat proteins. Thanks for the laugh!

Dog food poll…?

1) What food do you feed your dog?
2) How does your dog do on it?
3) Were you feeding this food since you got him? If not, then what food was he on before?
4) Do you think you’re feeding a high quality food?
5) Is the food expensive?
Jo d- No, don’t say that! This is only meant for fun, not for who gets the best answer and who doesn’t. I’m curious to see the diversity in what dog owners feed their dogs!
Lots of thumbs up and thumbs down in this question, the people that get a lot of thumbs up are feeding high quality foods and the people that are getting a lot of thumbs down are feeding a low quality food. =]
Jason L- ???
Bianca S- Actually, I have to be completely honest with you, Beneful isn’t any better than Ol’ Roy. Infact, it may be worse.
I thought it was really interesting and fun to hear what you guys fed! Thanks for sharing!

vti answers:

First of all looking at all the previous answers. I can’t believe all the crappy food people actually feed their dogs. Are they just uneducated or they just don’t care about their dog’s well being.

1) What food do you feed your dog?
I switch off between Merrick, Wellness, Innova, California Natural, and Eagle Pack Holistic Select. Sometimes they get left overs added to their food. Steak, hambuger, turkey, chicken, rice, etc. I like to give them a variety so they don’t get bored eating the same food and they build up an immunity to different kinds of food so they are less likely to develop an allergy. I also like to switch so they get different levels of protein.

2) How does your dog do on it?
Very well. Can’t remember the last time any of my 6 dogs have had an upset stomach or vomited. I think i can recall maybe 2 or 3 times my dogs have vomited since the day i got them. My oldest one being 7 years and my youngest 4 months.

3) Were you feeding this food since you got him? If not, then what food was he on before?
Some of my dogs were being fed Eukanuba Low residue, one was being fed Royal Canin, and one ate Science diet prior to me adopting them them. When i got them i always switched to a higher quality food.

4) Do you think you’re feeding a high quality food?
Absolutely!

5) Is the food expensive?
Yes but my dog’s health and well being is priceless

Any home remedies for chapped lips?

i said i tried vaseline.
anything else?
vaseline dries my lips out

vti answers:

Home Remedies and Natural Cures for Chapped Lips Treatment:

===================================================

*Chapped Lips Home Remedy Using Honey and Vaseline*

The nutritional characteristics of honey make it an amazing healing and anti-bacterial agent. Similarly, Vaseline is considered one of the best skin protectants. When these two items are combined, you have an effective home remedy for chapped lips:

-Put some honey on your lips let it dry for a few seconds.

-Without moving your lips, apply some Vaseline on top of the lips.

-Leave the honey and Vaseline on your lips for 10-15 minutes.

-Finally, dip a Q-tip dip in hot water and use it to remove the honey and Vaseline in two strokes.

-Do this once a day for about 2-5 days to get rid of chapped lips.

===================================================

*Natural Remedy for Chapped Lips Using Water Therapy*

Dehydration Can Cause Chapped Lips:

Keeping your cells hydrated by drinking plenty of water can help keep your lips from getting dry and chapped. Drinking at least eight glasses of water a day can help your chapped lips heal, and will lower your chances of having chapped lips in the future.

Since dehydration is the main cause of dry or chapped lips, it is recommended to drink at least 2-3 litres of water daily.

===================================================

*Natural Cure for Chapped Lips Using Cucumbers*

Rub your lips with a slice of cucumber. Many people have found this to be a simple but effective chapped lip remedy.

===================================================

*Using Aloe Vera for Curing Chapped Lips*

The herbal benefits of Aloe Vera make it an amazing healing agent for skin. Therefore, to cure chapped lips, try putting a small amount of Aloe Vera gel on your lips daily.

===================================================

*Use Lip Balm Once Every Hour*

Use a lip balm. Numerous products are available over the counter. Pick one that you like so you’ll use it frequently. Most lip balms are waxy or greasy and work by sealing in moisture with a protective barrier. Plain old petroleum jelly works just fine, too.

Chapped lips are caused by the skin on your lips getting dried out. Using lip balm every hour, or at least every two hours, will keeps your lips from getting too dry.

===================================================

*Humidify Your Home*

If you frequently have chapped lips, the problem could be that the air in your home is too dry. Using a humidifier, especially in the rooms where you spend most of your time, could help. Also, on dry winter days, try to use a humidifier in your home to keep the air moist.

Others Recommendations:

Apply an excessive amount of carmex onto your lips at night, like a nice thick slab over your lips, and in the morning your lips will be good as new, because they have been absorbing the menthol, camphor, and phenol which helps bring back the normal texture to your lips.

I recommend carmex, it has only natural ingredients; Menthol, Camphor, Alum, Cocoa Butter, and Mineral oil. It works wonders for my lips! It’s avaliable in most stores. Get it! It’s worth it!

Apply Vitamin E on the lips before going to bed and leave it overnight, and when you wake up the next morning, you’ll see the difference! Try this for 3 days or as needed. It’s very easy and convenient! Just punch a little hole into the Vitamin E capsule and squeeze the liquid onto the lips.

===================================================

Massaging coconut oil onto my lips every day has completely taken care of my chapped lips. I have had dry chapped lips most of my life. Coconut oil is the only thing that has ever worked.

===================================================

Moisturize and protect your parched, peeling lips with castor oil. Carry a small travel size squeezeable bottle of the oil and apply it with your finger often throughout the day. If you plan to be out in the sun, use a natural petroleum and alcohol-free balm with an SPF of 15 a few minutes after rubbing in the castor oil.

===================================================

I hope you’ll find the above recommendations useful and be able to find at least one or two methods that will work for you. Good Luck and I hope your lips will feel better soon.

Any home remedies for acne?

I don’t actually have acne, but pimples still bug me some days. And today would be one of those days. Any home remedies or suggestions? Thanks (:

vti answers:

Home Remedies For Acne

*Apply some toothpaste on the acne. Do NOT apply on skin because it will make it dry, only on the acne spots.
*Cook oatmeal and apply on face for fifteen minutes, then wash.
*Rub the acne with garlic cloves several times a day.
*Natural remedy for acne with avocado: Wash face with avocado paste mixed with water.
*Clean your skin: soak a cotton ball in either lemon juice or apple cider vinegar and apply on face.
*Clean your face every morning with cotton ball soaked with vinegar; might sting; try on a small part first.
*Herbal remedy: use lavender compresses to relieve inflammation.
*Dip a cotton ball in egg whites and apply on clean face, wait a few hours and wash.
*For acne scars: Mix 1 tablespoon of sour cream ( 0% fat for oily face), 1 tablespoon of yogurt, 1 tablespoon of grind oatmeal and 3-4 drops of lemon juice. Apply on face, leave for 10 minutes and wash off.
*Boil water in a pan, add some apple cider vinegar. Cool, put a towel on your head and bend over the pan.
*Mix 2-3 tea bags to some basil and cook in boiling water for 10-20 minutes. Then apply on the acne with a cotton ball.
*Use fresh mint juice to apply on your face
*Milk that you drink is useful as a home remedy for acne. Blend nutmeg with milk and you have a powerful paste to zap those pimples away
*Make a paste with cucmbers or squeeze cucmbers and apply juice with cotton ball

Hope this helps you out. I know many people have used toothpaste. Of course nothing is an instant cure. The lavender does sooth your skin. Oatmeal is used in hospitals for bathing irritated skin. Naturally, many of the substances that tend to sting are used as antiseptic such as vinegar, lemon juice, garlic and so on. I have heard that the ancients used avacado and I know mint is helpful. It may be a while until you discover what works best for you.

Be sure and wash your face 3 times a day with acne prepared soap and use a acne freshner afterward. Then inbetween you can try out some of the above remedies. It is crucial to keep your skin clean. Watch your food intake, I’m not sure if you notice an increase in outbreaks dependent on your choice of foods, but it can’t hurt to go easy on grease, chocolate and so on. Drink as much water as you can, get plenty of rest and Good Luck!

Home remedies for damaged hair?

Over the past few years, I’ve dyed and bleached my hair a lot, and now it’s pretty dry, and falls out easily. I, of course, am going to rest my hair from chemicals for a bit, but I was wondering if anyone had any simple home remedies, or any hair products that would repair my hair in one use. Any useful information would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Anyone know of any natural remedies for high blood pressure?

I have been walking everyday for over a year and follow a healthy diet. Have lost 70 lbs. I know I look better and feel better, but my blood pressure is very high. It just won’t come down. I really would like to try a natural remedy. If anyone can help, I appreciate it. Thanks.

vti answers:

Don’t eat salt. Talk a children’s aspirin daily.

There are very effective pills for this, so why do you want to use a “natural” remedy? High blood pressure is very serious and is called the “silent killer” because you will suddenly have a stroke without warning. Do not mess with this. Go get a real prescription. You will feel a lot better.

Susan asks…

what are the home remedies for high blood pressure?

vti answers:

There are many natural herbs and vitamins to help blood pressure. Garlic and cinnamon do help.

But I found that a vitamin called POLICOSANOL is specifically good at helping to remove plaque and lower blood pressure. There are 2 kinds–one made from rice and one made from sugar cane. Use the one from sugar cane, which has been found to have the same effects as leading advertised drugs out today, without any side effects that make these drugs so dangerous. The Rice version was found in studies to have no effect whatsoever.

I would suggest searching out a local health food store and asking questions. But be careful of having to buy a ton of extra vitamins. Also check out a natural or holistic doctor who can give you suggestions. They tend to examine a person from many perspectives, not just the physical.

Good luck.

Home Remedies for High Blood Pressure?

What are the home remedies for high blood pressure or how to get rid of high blood pressure issue? Natural treatment and cure at home.

vti answers:

FISH OIL is great for high blood pressure.

My cardilogist’s nurse told me that it is OK to take up to 4,000mg of fish oil a day. Choose a reputable, yet easily found brand, for example Carlson. My Integrative MD said that 3,000mg would be enough.

Also: WORK OUT. Use the elliptical and also: lifting weights is GREAT to lower blood pressure.

Also: see take you blood pressure daily at home, to see where you are going, and work with a doctor that you trust to adjust your lifestyle as needed. It might not be easy to find the right doctor. Unfortunately, most of of them today tend to solve problems with a pill and nothing else. But for long-term results, you need to work on your lifestyle.

Any natural remedies to reduce high blood pressure?

i am taking meds to reduce my high bp but its not very effective. I dont know if it will bring a permanent change. i have to be totally dependent on it..i also want to start with some natural remedies that will help control blood pressure on a long term basis. Do you have any suggestions ?

vti answers:

I’m really sorry to hear about your BP issue….however, BP is not a matter for you and I to try home remedies on. Anything that works on the blood may have other side effects (other than BP) on the heart itself.
For a direct answer…..monitor your eating habits. Salt etc will certainly raise your BP, as will other foods. Try the Mediterranean diet as it will bring down inflammation, BP, and stop any p[possible obstructions..Please try to do some cardio (walking, jogging, etc) at least 3 times a week….it will help tremendously starting in a few weeks after you begin.

Heartburn. Home remedys?

I’ve had heartburn all day and haven’t ate anything because I don’t want to make it worse. Tried taking a Tums and it relieved it a little bit but not fully. What are some foods I can eat that will make it lighten up or possibly go away (besides milk)?

I swear by pickle juice straight from the jar. For some odd reason it works really well for me! I would suggest Gaviscon, though. That works so much better than Tums.

Anxiety!!!?

Basically, I use to have anxiety and like a month ago I had an attack. I didn’t know it would be anxiety but sure enough i went to the doctor she said I have it. She told me these 2 techinques ( counting to 10, visualize a place) but it doesn’t help. Now I think its not bad, its stupid, etc. but when i get it, it takes over me. I just want to get it over with, so I could go to camp and not to panic always.

vti answers:

Hey buddy. There are a few things you can do to relieve the symptoms of stress and anxiety and reduce its affects on your body and immune system. …..to better deal with the daily helping of dramas we are all exposed to ♥

Eat more foods rich in magnesium ~ magnesium is known as the antistress mineral and will help you deal with stressy situations and just the daily grind of life better.

Foods rich in magnesium are ~ leafy and green vegies, nuts and seeds, wholegrain cereals and breads and cold water fishes such as tuna, sardines, salmon and whiting……….. The EFA’s (essential fatty acids) in the cold water fishes do a brilliant job for me for equalising my moods and stress levels, i try to eat some description of fish each day….. But each person is different and you need to find your own level.

Magnesium is needed in the body for healthy nerve and muscle functioning and of course for heart health. Foods rich in magnesium will also aide in eliminating constipation by increasing the production of hydrochloric acid in the tummy and thus assisting in digestion………… Magnesium will also cure an acid tummy.

A deficiency in vitamin B12 will produce symptoms such as chest pains and heart palpitations, headaches and migraines, numbness and tingling and prickling sensations in the outer extremities, dizzy spells, fainting and loss of balance, excessive sweating, excessive urination and dry mouth, nausea and vomiting, fatigue and exhaustion, stress and depression, insomnia and constipation, irritability and moodiness and an inability to think clearly ….Quite scary actually if you don’t realise the vitamin factor.

If you are lactose intolerant or vegetarian then it is really important that you supplement your diet with a multi B complex tablet on a daily basis.

Take a multi B complex supplement on a daily basis. The B complex of vitamins is needed to support a healthy nervous, immune and digestive system and will help you enormously in dealing with stress.

They are a water soluble complex and as such our bodies can neither store or produce them, therefore we need to ingest them on a daily basis or suffer the side affects.

When we are placed under added stress such as work responsibilities, relationship dramas, new house, sickness, school studies the first group of vitamins to be used up will be the B complex and in these situations we need to adjust our intake accordingly…… Simply take another B complex tablet when you are stressed, as they are water soluble any excess that your body doesn’t need will simply be excreted in your urine….. The B complex relies on calcium and vitamin D to be effectively assimilated so if you aren’t getting enough calcium and vitamin D naturally take a calcium supplement containing vitamin D3.

Get a supplement that includes all the B’s ie ~ B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12 as they all work synergistically (as a group)…. Don’t buy any of the B complex of vitamins individually, but rather as a whole complex of vitamins unless told to do so by a nutritionally oriented physician or naturopath.

Drink loads of fresh filtered water too as the happiest and healthiest body will always be the most hydrated one.

Water is imperative to life. Without water your body will have a terrible time breathing, digesting food, transporting nutrients, lubricating your joint sockets etc.etc.etc.etc……… Nothing substitutes for water. Your body needs at least 2 – 3 litres of water daily to function efficiently.

Also, try to cut back on drinks such as coffee, tea, alcohol, sodas and soft drinks (if you drink any of them) which will all do great job of dehydrating you and of robbing you of your precious B complex of vitamins… . Ie: just 1 can of soda or soft drink will make your body peesh out up to 12 cups of water !!! 1 cup of coffee will make your body peesh out about 2 cups of water ……….. Read the book by F. Batmanghelidj, M.D…. “Your body’s many cries for water”…… An astounding and scary and very true read.

Other things that could be robbing you of your precious B complex of vitamins are :- eating too much protein, most otc cold medicines actually, alcohol, eating too much tinned food, antiobiotics ,antidepressants, penicillin, prednisone and aspirin, laxatives and diuretics, the oral contraceptive and eoestrogen supplementation .

Quite a handfull of information here …….. Sorry it’s a bit long winded but you need to know all this.

Get out in the fresh air and sunshine (vitamin D) and exercise as this will naturally raise the levels of serotonin in your brain and just make you feel fine ……….. Hey, even if its a walk in the park, chasing your mates around the shopping centre or even jumping in puddles when it rains, so long as it puts a smile on your dial buddy ………. Works for me ♥

I sincerely wish you the best of health & vitality buddy and hope that you at least drink more water if you aren’t already doing that♥♥♥

Amino Acids supplements and anxiety?

I started taking Amino Acids supplements when I started lifting weights. I take 3 gnc 1000 pills in the morning before work. I missed a dose and I noticed a considerable amount of less stress and anxiety in my mind. Is there any research that shows this? Has anyone else heard about the connection between amino acids and anxiety?

vti answers:

I don’t think there is a corelation, you can try this “missed dose” thing again on purpose, it should not change anxiety patterns, good luck

Laura asks…

is there a natural supplement for anxiety disorder?

vti answers:

Check out GABA
Its a substance the brain naturally produces from within, though some people may produce a bit less than they need, perhaps due to nutrition deficiencies or imbalances or for any other reason.
IF you are on the Atkins diet, quit that and start having a balanced diet, including complex carbohydrates which actually help the body produce its own GABA. Certain foods will be more beneficial in helping you produce your own GABA naturally, including green tea, almonds, whole grains, brown rice, oats, etc…
You could also get supplements from health food stores.

“it makes sense to eat foods that stimulate the creation of neurotransmitters to replace those that are deficient. Since GABA is produced in the Krebs Cycle and complex carbohydrates produce glutamine that is an important part of that Cycle, and is also the precursor to GABA, then the consumption of such foods should in theory produce more GABA. In this case the theory works, and you should eat foods rich in complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, brown rice and oats as part of your diet.”

“Other foods that are high in glutamine or its precursors, glutamic acid and glutamate, include CITRUS FRUITS, BEEF LIVER, BROCCOLLI, HALIBUT fish, and LENTILS.

A useful supplement to take is L-theanine, an amino acid found in GREEN TEA, and available in supplement form. L-theanine can calm your nerves while maintaining clarity of thought. In other words it calms you down, but doesn’t make you drowsy and allows you to enjoy your day with anxiety. ”

David asks…

Best anxiety and depression supplement?

Please let me explain. I have had anxiety for the last 8 years every single day of my life. It has affected my life, have been unable to keep a steady job due to this. I have been to doctors which have prescribed me meds, but NONE have worked. They actually made me feel worse. I have tried counceling as well and prayed with every ounce of my being. I take a multivitamin (One A Day Womens). I am also suffering from severe depression as well, so it is a combination of both. Every time i attempt to work, i have a hard time focusing and comprehending what i’m doing because the anxiety is just so bad. It’s more than a matter of “trying to calm down” this is something that i deal with every single day, all day, not just certain moments or situations. So now i am hoping there is something natural out there that will help. Something that DOES NOT MAKE YOU DROWSY. I need something that i can take to start my day with. Please only recommend something you have experience with. I’m not looking for people to try to sell me stuff on here so please go elsewhere if you are targeting buyers. This is my life here and this is a serious question. My last resort, since i have tried everything else and nothing has worked. Would appreciate all the recommendations from your personal experiences. Thank You!

This is from an article that will help you:

“Anxiety and depression, sadly, are very good friends. Many anxiety sufferers tend to develop depression and there seems to be a strong link between the two conditions.

As a full time blogger about natural alternative therapies, I read dozens of ideas, causes, treatments, success stories and sad stories about anxiety and depression treatment.

Lately I realized that I can do some good with all the information I find daily, and make a list of little known causes and solutions, found by real people all around the world – And share it with my readers.

I hope you will find some new information that could become the light at the end of the anxiety and depression tunnel.

Anxiety and Depression Solutions – By Real People

Check your thyroid – Hypothyroidism, for example, often has numerous associated mental symptoms. People suffering from hypothyroidism often report feeling like they cannot cope, life is simply too much, and start withdrawing from society. They often feel an amazing depression relief after treating this underlying cause. If you want to check your self for under active thyroid, check your body temperature with a thermometer, the second you wake up in the morning. It’s important to stay still while doing this. Test yourself for 5 days in a row. If the reading is consistently 97.6 degrees Fahrenheit or lower you may have an under active thyroid and you should consult with your physician.
Check for intestinal parasites – People suffering from intestinal parasites often report feeling like the world is coming to an end. Who knows? Maybe your constant depression is caused by these little creatures that can be quite easily destroyed!
Check your Vitamin D levels– Vitamin D has a strong effect on brain function. You can buy a natural source of vitamin D – like Natural Fish Oil Anxiety and Depression – Little Known Causes and Solutions for Depression and Anxiety Disorder and Fermented Cod Liver Oil Anxiety and Depression – Little Known Causes and Solutions for Depression and Anxiety Disorder. There are many positive testimonials about the amazing effects fermented cod liver oil on depression. The cheapest source is Vitamin D until today – Is of course some sunshine!
Adrenal Fatigue and Gluten Allergies – I found a significant bunch of people who discovered that the reason for their depression and anxiety is adrenal fatigue or gluten allergies. Both can be checked by your doctor.
Valerian Root – Some people swear by this natural herb. The most recommended brand was GNC Herbal Plus® Standardized Valerian Root Anxiety and Depression – Little Known Causes and Solutions for Depression and Anxiety Disorder. It is 500mg per capsule, 0.8% valerenic acids per 4mg. You can take one capsule when you feel an anxiety or panic attack coming; the results for some people are fantastic.

Check your potassium levels …

Mark asks…

will taking a calcium supplement reduce anxiety?

will taking a calcium supplement that says it’s for sore throats, stomach burn etc; help reduce anxiety. I heard that calcium does.

vti answers:

A balanced diet will surely help to reduce your anxiety. Everybody is different, so, you should consult your doctor about whether or not you need to take more calcium, maybe you do. Calcium is really essential for your body. Outside its function in bone, it plays other important ones: in secreting hormones and enzymes and regulating their activity, it is used to send messages throughout the nervous system, it is involved in blood clotting and it aids in blood vessel and muscle contraction and expansion, it also contributes to normal heart rhythm.

B-12 vitamins for clearer skin?

I was wondering if taking B-12 vitamins would help mild acne clear up. I heard this vitamin was good for hair and nail growth, but is it good for your skin too?

vti answers:

Vitamins A, C, E & K are good, too.

You also want to STOP eating and drinking foods with refined or artificial sugars, like high fructose corn syrup, crystalline fructose or aspartame/phenylalanine. Do some exercise like dancing or yoga. Get a little sun everyday, no more than 10 minutes if you have a light complexion. Drink more water. Try using witchazel as a toner during the day, and unfiltered apple cider vinegar at night.

Here are some other tips to try:

A raw potato is cheap and brilliant acne natural cure, especially for whiteheads. The vitamin C makes your skin glow, and alkaline in the potato kills the bacteria on your face. The potato also has an exfoliating effect helping you to get rid of dead skin cells. Papaya fruit produces similar effect; you should also use it raw. (Make sure the potato isn’t genetically modified!)

Chris asks…

mutlivitamin and hair, skin & nails vitamin–safe?

I have been taking a multi-vitamin for a couple of months now, but i wanted to improve the health of my hair skin and nails…is it safe to take both?

mutli-vitamin is one a day and HS&N vitamin is two a day.
Is that still safe? Should I stop taking the multi-vitamin.

vti answers:

Vitamins are any of various fat-soluble or water-soluble organic substances essential for normal growth and activity of the body and obtained naturally from plant and animal foods. Hence vitamins are foods not drugs. Therefore it is safe to take any combination of vitamins and minerals, which are also foods. It is even safe to take them with most pharmaceutical products. As a matter of fact it is essential that you take them with some form of drugs, such as anti-biotic etc.

Another thing to note is that while there is usually a recommended dosage on the package, these dosages are usually a small percentage of what our bodies require to function healthy. The manufacturer takes into consideration that there are a few persons who eats very well and are in good health. The intention is that these persons take the supplements to maintain their good health. It follows then that if you’re having a problem you will need more vitamins than those that are having good health. For this reason even doubling or tripling dosages are sometimes necessary to restore good health. Hence if you are taking a number of supplements with the same content except for a few differences, it is still safe to take them all together.

When shopping for supplements however, it is better to select those formulated from natural foods. These are usually more effective since your body will absorb most of its contents. Synthetically formed supplements do not absorb well and so you get very little if anything from these. Some of these can prove to be toxic over time. For example synthetically formulated vitamin A is toxic if taken over certain concentration over time. However you can use carotenoids (from natural foods) which are precursors to vitamin A (meaning your body uses these carotene to produce vitamin A) and get better results without the toxicity.

Another thing to note is that your hair, skin and nails are usually the last to indicate deficiency. Usually the major organs such as the heart, kidney, bones etc., pulls from these areas, when they are not getting enough to function well. Sometimes the reason you are deficient in a nutrient is not because you are not consuming this particular nutrient, but because you are not consuming other nutrients that are essential for its transportation and absorption. For example, fat soluble vitamins needs fat to transport them. Calcium needs vitamin D, K, phosphorous and other nutrients for effective absorption.

Hence it would be equally as good for your hair, nails and skin if you take a very good multivitamin plus minerals, formulated from natural foods while you stick to a very good diet.

Charles asks…

which vitamin helps in skin lightening?

vti answers:

Vitamin E is good for skin.
To lighten the skin vitamin C also helps.
Consume fruits like oranges, lime which are very rich source of Vitamin C

James asks…

Good vitamins for skin?

What are the vitamins that are good for the skin. Also if i where to take a multivitamin, would it include all those vitamins?

vti answers:

Oral vitamins are not reliably for skin health.

1) There are trillions of cells in the body, there is no guarantee that vitamins will reach skin.
2) There is no guarantee that oral vitamin supplementation works either. You take a multivitamin ONLY IF you are vitamin deficient. Otherwise, you can just wasting money. If you eat fruits and vegetable on a daily basis, then you have adequate amount of vitamins in your system.

Topically, vitamin A, B3, C, D, E, and F are good.

Lizzie asks…

Lightening vitamins for skin? ?

Name skin lightening vitamins I can take.

vti answers:

Vitamins that make your skin lighter? There is no such thing, don’t believe anything that’s put on tv. The only was to lighten your skin is by exfoliating, bleaching or using lighting creams.

John asks…

what is the appropiate age for a cell phone?

vti answers:

Depends on the age and the reason for the call, my kids had one at 10, it could only call the house or our cell phones, it was for emergencies and so we could stay in touch ( he walked to his babysitters from school) We could also call him to say we are home so he could come home, or go somewhere else.

He got a real one at 13, abused it, got it taken away, tried again a few months later, lost the phone within a week.

He is now 15 and had a pay as you go phone which he pays for, so far he has been pretty good, he did get it taken away for texting in class.

If it is just so they can text message with their friends, I would suggest pay as you go, so they have limits and you don’t have to worry about a huge phone bill, our sons phone is in his own name, he gets a statement, gives him some responsibility

Mark asks…

Is it bad to use anti-aging skin products at a young age?

I always buy organic anti-aging facial serums, creams, etc. I have a whole big regiment for my skin, and I have really good skin because of it. But someone just told me that using anti-aging products at a young age speeds up cell replication and you don’t want that at a young age. Is it true or is there no harm in it?

vti answers:

Yes.

BUT . . . .You can prevent aging by starting NOW AND YOU won’t be needing anti-aging when you’re 50.

1. Staying out of the sun. If you have gotten sunburned before you’re 18, you’ll have dark spots or brown spots, some get freckles and those will get darker and bumpier as you get older. It’s best not to make them darker or bumpy, and staying out of the sun will prevent that. Just from the heat, can make anyone flaky. I use my wide brim hat everywhere I go, and while I’m inside a car as a rider, I use blanket over the window or sit where it’s shady. Lotions does not protect you from sunburn, same with cancer and could permanently discolor your skin. Lotions does not protect you from skin disease.

2. Don’t go in a tanning bed. You’ll aged 10-15 years faster.

3. Bathing or showering in hot water and too much chlorine can make you looking like ‘dishpan hands’. Use warm water.

4. Use a washcloth when taking a shower. I use Bath & Body (Suave, Dove, Irish Spring, etc.) wash for body & face. No baths! The less you’re in the water, the less you’ll get wrinkles.

5. For oily skin, the less you fuss with your skin, the better. Keep your face oil-free & dry from dirt & perspiration. Blot it with a tissue or blotter, and keep them dry. Using powder foundation, blush & eyeshadow is best. Less is best, less product poisoning. Google Elizabeth Taylor when she’s 16, then Google her when she’s 79.

6. Servings of 3-5 fresh fruits & vegetables daily. Google: FIVE FOODS TO EAT FOR BEAUTIFUL SKIN
All the vitamins & minerals you need for good skin care comes from all the healthy foods you eat from Mother Nature.

7. For your hands, wear gloves winter, spring, fall, and wear gloves for every chores you do, so you don’t have to wash them often. In the garden, office, kitchen. Thank God for those! Too bad they don’t have ones for feet.

None of those anti aging products works. Many are not approved by the FDA, it’s trendy right now because people are desperate. You can’t plump a raisin back to grapes, not possible. You can try soaking them with serum, or whale sperm, or water or juice, but it’s never the same as before. Skin is the same thing . . . That’s why people go for the faster route. They travel to Brazil to get a cheap surgery, but they come back to Beverly Hills to get them corrected.

The function of the FDA is to monitor new drugs, such as anti aging products, entering into the marketplace and ensure that they are safe and effective. Unfortunately, many anti aging skin care products as well as other anti aging products use wild and exaggerated claims in their marketing materials.

According to the FDA, a big controversy with some of the advertising are claims that anti aging products will rejuvenate or repair or restructure the skin. These types of claims lead to speculation that the product is causing structural changes to the skin. If this is true, these products should be classified as drugs and should be removed from the market until the FDA has approved them. Conversely, if these claims are not true, the companies should stop claiming these features for their products.

In the past, the FDA has sent regulatory letters to the cosmetic companies making these types of claims informing them that they may be in violation of federal laws.

Joseph asks…

wrong age on cell phone order?

i orderd a cell from zurvita mobile but i put my age as 1991 and im only 17 my date is 1992 and it went through so what can happen what should i do the phone is already on its way sending will they just not send me the phone since my age is wrong?

vti answers:

If you wrote your age down wrong, I don’t see how they can check so they’ll just send it. You should be safe 🙂

Carol asks…

What is a good age for a cell phone?

I am just wondering. I bet some 9-year-olds can do that.

vti answers:

When a child is old enough that they’re doing things without direct adult supervision, then it’s a good age to introduce a cell phone that can call only mom, dad and 911. When I was a kid and I was ready to be picked up from the mall or someone forgot to get me from ballet lessons or whatever, I used a payphone. Pay phones aren’t easy to find anymore because everyone has a cell phone. But if your child is young enough to still be supervised, then the adult they’re with almost certainly has a cell phone and there’s no need for the child to have his/her own.

When a child is old enough to hold a job and pay the bill, then it’s a good age to allow them a more traditional phone.

Lisa asks…

Herbalife?????????????????

Has anyone her every taking it . If so did you lose weight and did you have any side affects?

vti answers:

Yes I tried something called the Formula 1 Instant, and I lost 15 pounds in 3-4 weeks. The stuff Herbalife has is supposed to be meal-replacement shakes for breakfast and lunch. When on the plan you should try not to have regular fatty foods at the same time. Each Shapeworks program lasts 30 days, so when you calculate it it comes to about less than $3 per meal. You’re only wasting money if you are on regular foods and Herbalife at the same time!

I also disagree with the first poster. After Herbalife when you eat “normal” you don’t automatically gain the weight back (unless you want to). The point of Herbalife is to help people lose the weight they want to lose. When they reach a plateau, they have an option to continue with Herbalife to maintain their weight, or to eat regular *lean* foods to keep the weight down. There’s just so few lean and healthy options these days that I am having Herbalife shake for my lunch everyday.

Distributors are there to help you plan your progress. Yes they will try to make money because they want to help you and provide guidance. Or if you don’t want coaching, you can just go to some vitamin shop or gnc and try those stuff; nobody will answer your questions in case you don’t lose any weight.

James asks…

Herbalife??

My cousin lost 3 pants sizes in 1 week!! I want 2 know if this works.. Because im afraid if i use it then stop, ill gain it back and MORE.. So does it work?? Nd i tried the aloe then the cookies nd cream milkshake.. it was ok.. not totally Nasty.. so i was wondering if this really worked so i can buy it..

vti answers:

Herbalife makes half decent products and they are pretty effective. But if you don’t change your habbits then you will put the weight back on. Permenant weight loss if a lifestyle change not the result of any diet or products.

Plus any weight loss you do, reguardless of how you do it or what you use, you need to stay on that program for a while. Normally at least 60 days plus another 30 days for every 10 pounds if you lost over 50 pounds. The reason is you need to allow your body to lock in on your new weight and motabolism levels. If not you will go back up.

Donna asks…

Are Herbalife Products Safe??

i am underweight. my boy friend suggested i should take Herbalife productss gain weight. but i am little scared to take these products. one always hear the side effects these weight gaining products have on your body.
have anyone tried them? do they really work & are they safe?

thanks in advance guys!

vti answers:

Herbalife herbal diet pills are one of the most infamous weight loss scams. People take herbal supplements, like Herbalife, under the impression that because they are “just herbs,” they can’t be dangerous. Unfortunately, this is not true. Herbalife contains ma huang. Ma huang, also called ephedra, contains ephidrine. The FDA warns that Herbalife has been linked to “dozens of deaths” and more than 300 cases of medical problems have related to ephedrine.

Herbalife’s product offering includes weight-management products such as Formula 1 Nutritional Shake Mix, a meal-replacement shake and one of the first products introduced by the company. Other nutritional products offered by Herbalife range from dietary supplements made from vitamins, minerals and herbs to personal care products emphasizing nutritional and herbal ingredients, such as aloe vera and vitamin C.
As of 2005, it is not immediately clear what method Herbalife’s weight loss products employ [citation needed], although the nutritional ingredients are listed on the product. Recent advertisements indicate that the current philosophy is one of meal replacement via diet shakes, and nutritional supplements.
Proponents claim that the Herbalife strategy is aligned with health industry recommendations for safe weight control, eating a balanced diet, low in calories and taking regular exercise, and that their nutritional and weight management line of products facilitate this through macronutrient and micronutrient food formulas. Herbalife provides testimonials from health professionals as part of their marketing campaign.
Some of the original Herbalife weight loss products contained the active ingredient Ma Huang or Sida cordifolia, two herbs containing ephedrine alkaloids. Adverse reactions involving the company’s Thermojetics original green tablets were recorded by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Herbalife subsequently stopped using ephedrine in its products in the face of rising insurance premiums.[3][4] The U.S. FDA banned supplements containing ephedra in 2004.[5]Ephidrine can induce nausea, disorientation, insomnia, heart attacks, seizures and strokes. Despite the FDA’s warning, Herbalife is still in business and brags about its sales worldwide.

Susan asks…

Does herbalife really work?

My diet plan is this
Breakfast: Shake with protein powder
Healthy snack: Fruit
Lunch: Shake with protein powder
Healthy snack: Fruit
Dinner: Something but lil of it a small portion.

vti answers:

You would be wise to avoid using Herbalife products. Herbalife has been involved in many health problems. Here are some examples.

Example 1: “Severe hepatotoxicity following ingestion of Herbalife nutritional supplements contaminated with Bacillus subtilis.”
Ref: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19010564

Example 2: “An association between intake of Herbalife products and acute hepatitis was identified in Israel. We call for prospective evaluation of Herbalife products for possible hepatotoxicity.”
Ref: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17692424

Example 3: “Hepatotoxicity is probably associated with the use of Herbalife products. Hepatotoxicity due to herbal remedies is an important differential diagnosis in the diagnostic work-up of liver injury.”
Ref: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20197595

Herbalife is sold as a supplement and supplements are not approved by the FDA, are virtually unregulated, do not have the protections afforded foods and drugs, are not recommended by the US National Institute of Health, do not require any testing, are often contaminated, may not even be what the label says, usually contain cheap ingredients, are often over priced scams, have been known to be dangerous, and can have numerous adverse or unwanted side effects.

And, because Herbalife is only a crutch for healthy options, it should be avoided. When people diet and lose fat, they become lighter. When they become lighter, they burn fewer calories. And, when they get to their goal weight, they have to stop the diet, keep the fat from returning, and do it with fewer calories than they could eat before going on the diet. That’s what makes rebound fat so common. People approach fat loss without thinking about what happens when they lose the fat.

If you have what it takes to lose fat, keep it off, and do it with fewer calories per day than before the diet, you have what it takes to learn how to eat properly and habituate that behavior and lose the fat in the best of all possible ways…through sensible eating.

If you need to know how to lose fat, read my answer about how to lose fat –> http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=As615QJM4X_3ID9_05qmmlXty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20111028185603AAVcP4D

Charles asks…

Where can I buy herbalife liftoff?

i was wondering if i could buy it at a drug store or a vitamin shop or something. do they sell it there. i live in the US. no online answers please i just want to purchase it in person.

vti answers:

You have to buy it from a Herbalife dealer. Herbalife is a multi level marketing program that focuses more on profit than actual nutrition.
I know several people that have tried Herbalife, Isagenix, Nanci, Nutrilite, Healthy People, and Advocare weight loss supplements.
They all weigh the same or more than when they tried them. And ended up with a bunch of product.
Alli is the only over the counter weight loss product approved by the FDA. There are only three prescription weight loss medications approved. Do you think that if any of them REALLY worked we would have a $60 billion a year industry in “weight loss” supplements? The big three pharmaceuticals would dominate the market.
Approved or otherwise, none of these weight loss supplements guarantee anything unless you establish a healthy diet and exercise program.
So why not just establish a healthy diet and exercise program and keep your money?
The only weight loss supplement I recommend is a basic multivitamin and maybe a fish oil if you don’t like fish.
You will be spending somewhere between $10 and $30 per day on products that are not approved or guaranteed to do anything. $300 to $900 per month would get you a premier spa membership and the positive feeling that comes from working out and feeling healthier.
All of the above mentioned diet products are “multi level marketing” or “work from home” programs. I think these products are the worst since they exploit both the desires of people to lose weight and to make money.

I live in a very nice area of Scottsdale, AZ. 90% of the “make money from home” signs along the roadways are Herbalife when you call and press them for information. These companies are more concerned with profits than weight loss. As are all the MLMs.
