Mary asks…

what are the home remedies to tackle constipation?

vti answers:

Perhaps red meat is the culprit as in http://au.search.yahoo.com/search?p=%22red+meat%22+%2B+constipation&fr=ush-ans as it can take up to 3 days to go through the system.

The intake of foods such as milk, cheese, white rice, white flour and red meat should be restricted, because they tend to contribute to constipation.

Any food that has had the fiber stripped out, the nutrients processed out or slows down the digestion is a constipation culprit. Here’s a list of foods shown to cause constipation problems:

•Meats, especially fatty meats, red meat and processed meats,

•Dairy Products, such as cheese, ice cream and whole milk,

•Fast Foods – burgers, French fries and other fried foods, pizza, etc.,

•Refined grains, like white rice or any refined white flour products,

•Highly starchy foods – white potatoes, corn and all refined grains,

•Pastries and other high sugar products, such as cakes, cookies and pies,

•Deep-fried foods, chips and other foods that are high in bad fats.

You can see lots more in http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art14167.asp which tells you “How to Relieve Constipation Naturally”.

Sandy asks…

what is a good home remedy for constipation?

vti answers:

You probably need to improve your diet as you seem to have a constipation problem.

For constipation, castor oil is very good for a one-off remedy as in http://au.search.yahoo.com/search?p=%22castor+oil+for+constipation%22&fr=ush-ans but it is unsuitable for regular use.

For constipation, suppositories, laxatives and enemas are all totally unnecessary if you eat the right foods.

All fruit and vegetables in very large amounts are laxative.

You need to permanently change your diet or you are likely to get colon cancer.

Constipation can make you extremely unwell and can lead to colon cancer as it causes a build up of carcinogenic toxins in the system.

William asks…

Home remedies for dog constipation?

My dog is constipated, as she likes to chew shoes or anything she can get her paws on! Is there anything i can do that i might have at home? Its night time here and i cant ring the vet till tomorrow morning and i dont want to go to bed knowing that she can’t poo. Thanks in advance!

vti answers:

If she’s inclined to chew, rather than use any form of laxative/home preparation, I’d have her to a vet to make sure she doesn’t have a blockage. If you try to sort this out yourself, you could well do more harm, than good.

Depending on how long it’s been since she had a BM, and also whether she’s in obvious distress over this, I’d suggest it can probably wait until morning – try taking her out for a good walk before bed and see if that gets things moving?

Sandra asks…

Home remedies for constipation?

Well, I’m constipated and I have been for three days now. I need to go really bad. Help??

vti answers:

Do you have an apple or pear? Leave it out of the fridge for an hour and eat it. Also you can cut the apple up into pieces and boil it with a bit of apple juice. Eat it Hot. If you have Prune Juice, fill a mug with it and Drink it HOT. If you have Prunes, eat 8 of them, or 10 Dried Apricots with a tall glass of water. Any of these remedies will help you. I have had constipation issues for 35 years, and they’ve all worked for me.

William asks…

Are protein supplements legal?

Are protein supplements like whey protein legal or are they just as illegal as the Anabolic Steroids than when tested possitive can cause a lot of issues in sports events? Are protein supplements considered as food or drugs?

vti answers:

Protein supplements are nutritional complements. They are not illegal. When I use whey protein I don’t think of it as a drug. The word “supplements” says it all. These are just products to enhance your eating plan; therefore, they are very much associated with body builders, fitness buffs and athletes. Androsteindione, which is what Mark McGuire was using when he hit the 73 homeruns, is actually found naturally in sweet potatoes. There are many safe, legal methods of supplementing. The anabolic steroids are illegal for a reason. They can kill you!

John asks…

Weight Gain Supplements.?

What would happen if i take weight gain supplements but do not workout?

vti answers:

Most “weight gain” supplements are just massive amounts of sugar with a bit of cheap protein thrown in. I wasn’t even aware that they still marketed that crap. It was big in the 1990’s but seemed to have faded away after people realized it was just garbage. I used to take Weider’s “mega-mass 2000. It came in a big ‘dog food bag’ that was 10 or 20 lbs….I forget. But it was just garbage (like ALL supplements). It was approx 90% simple carbs in the form of pure sugar.

Anyway….to answer your question…..you’ll just get fatter. If you take a so-called weight gain supplement and do work out you’ll probably still just get fatter. Bulking and cutting is a waste of time. Stay lean and take the gains as they come. Muscular gains come from working the compound barbell movements with good intensity. Eating real, whole foods and getting enough sleep are also important. Throw away all you muscle mags as well. Joe Weider is the devil. He just wants your money. Dinosaur Training by Brooks Kubik is the only book you need.

Donna asks…

Dog supplements for pitbulls???

well i was doing some research on dog supplements for pitbulls, and i was wondering if the supplements are good for dogs?is it worth it?….
[[i want your opinions…please]]

would you give your pitbulls Dog supplements? or do you think thats a dumb idea??
do you think NuVet is a good pitbull supplement?……

i want my pitbull to grow a little bit more[[weight, muscle, and i want her to be healthier]]

vti answers:

What kind of supplements do you mean?
Glucosamine is an excellent supplement for joint health, as far as vitamin supplements go I would stay away from them if your dog is on a good quality dog food. High excess of certain vitamins and minerals can cause health problems. I bought a dog from a breeder that told me to add calcium to my puppys food and he ended up having calcium deposits on his tongue that had to be surgically removed! Its best to ask your vet first before adding a supplement.

Ken asks…

body building supplements ?

I m kindda skinny i m so desperate about gaining muscles and building my body up .. i tried to weight gainers while i m working out it seems to be they all fake. can anyone help me out to find the correct supplements ? if you can help me out i greatly appreciated .. thanks in advance…

vti answers:

Bodybuilding supplements are dietary supplements commonly used by those involved in bodybuilding and athletics. Bodybuilding supplements may be used to replace meals, enhance weight gain, promote weight loss or improve athletic performance. Among the most widely used are vitamin supplements, protein, branched-chain amino acids (BCAA), glutamine, essential fatty acids, meal replacement products, creatine, weight loss products and testosterone boosters. I hope that helped a little. =)

Mary asks…

BODY BUILDING SUPPLEMENTS?

Hi can anybody tell me whether body building supplements like coach formula super protein is good for health?is it safe?whats the difference between steroids and supplements.what are the side effects of these?.please explain in brief.thanx in advance

vti answers:

Sign…it seems like most people think all supplements are drugs of some sort. Judging from previous answers.

Steroids are hormones. Supplements are foods. See?
You body produce testosterone. That very hormone spike in the morning and make you little john stands up. That’s normal. If it doesn’t stand that abnormal. Then, testosterone make you stronger and recover faster after training. So, some people inject them. They get more testosterone for training and recovery. Injecting testosterone, steroid hormone, works this way.

For supplements, you see, after you trained hard and break your muscle down, you need protein for recovery. You want to eat 2 pounds of steak or just a glass of shake to fill your recovery. If you do eat a steak you get fat with it while drinking shake you get only things on the nutrition fact.

So, steroids are hormone. Supplements are foods. You will get some side effects from steroids as well as any people who have their hormonal disorder. You will not likely to get side effects from supplements unless you’re allergic to them.

Be warn though, some supplements possess side effects like creatine might cause you to become heat intorerant. Read the label and do some research before you pay.

In brief: Supplements are foods. Steroids are hormones. Steroid might cause side effects while supplements are not likely unless you are allergic.

What is an effective weight loss supplement not prescribe by a physician?

Warm weather is just around the corner and would like to lose a few pounds. So what is out there at our local stores (GNC, Vitamin Shoppe, etc) that i can take to help me increase my weight loss?

vti answers:

Steven asks…

What is an effective weight loss supplement not prescribe by a physician?

Warm weather is just around the corner and would like to lose a few pounds. So what is out there at our local stores (GNC, Vitamin Shoppe, etc) that i can take to help me increase my weight loss?

vti answers:

Here’s a few tips that work for me:
I spend a long time in front of a computer screen. Often I just stare at the monitor for up to 15 seconds while a page load or a document gets printed or whatever it is that the computer is doing.
When this is happening I lift my hands up over my head and then bring them down. I keep on doing this until the computer has finished whatever it is doing and it requires some input.,. From me.
I do similar exercises like getting up from the chair and sitting down again. I sometimes might be standing up and might type a few sentences while standing.
Combine this with drinking only water and I am doing something to lose weight. It is not much but doing it all the time it does help in losing weight.
I might swap this sometimes. I might decide that I will not do the arm exercise for a week but that week I will get off the lift two floor below and walk up the last two floors.
So long as when I go to bed at night I can say that that day I have done something extra to burn some weight, I am happy.

Lizzie asks…

What smoothie additives aid weight loss and/or muscle growth?

What super fruits or vitamins could i add to a smoothie to aid weight loss and/or muscle growth?

vti answers:

People who want to lose weight commonly, and first of all, think about reducing the amount of food they eat. This may be quite a solution but not exactly the best there is. In fact, depending on the amount you reduce in your food intake, it may even be dangerous to one’s health. So how does one lose weight effectively and safely? Here are some points one should consider when trying to lose weight:for more info…http://onlinecarez.blogspot.com/

George asks…

What can I do to boost my metabolism?

I exercise and eat healthy but still can’t lose weight. Do you know of any vitamins (vitamins…not weight loss drugs or anything) or foods that speed up the metabolism?

Any tips will help! Thanks a bunch!

vti answers:

You have allot of good answers.

Think of your metabolism as a fire you do not want to put out. Eat 6-8 smaller meals throughout the day to keep the tinder burning. Mix in fruit, nuts, protein, carbs etc…

Drink only water throughout the day. Often your body confuses hunger with thirst or dehydration you can avoid this by staying well hydrated. Gatorade, Powerade have a ton of calories sugar. Diet sodas will dehydrate you.

Green tea is a natural appetite suppressant as well had low in calories add some honey for taste.

Avoid the weight loss drugs. They will dehydrate you and suppress your appetite to much.

Food = Fuel!! Put in the high octane you will see the difference.

Daniel asks…

Is whey protein drinks good for weight loss?

My sister got this whey protein powder from vitamin world, and I’m using it as well. I want to lose weight and wondered if it would effect my weight loss.

vti answers:

Yes and no, if you are exercise then it will be good as your body is using to build muscle and if you are not doing any intensive exercise, then the protein will stay at your body and eventually will turn into fats if you don’t use it.

In facts, there are plenty of weight loss recipes in the net, you can check it out and some may suite your needs too, the one that I usually went was http://www.asianweightlossrecipes.com

Sharon asks…

Do Tanning booths help with vitamin D?

I have read that you need UV radiation from the sun to produce vitamin D, and that the sun is not strong enough in northern latitudes in the winter to produce vitamin D. Would a tanning booth help?

vti answers:

Vitamin D is a cheap supplement; I’m sure it’s way cheaper than using a tanning booth. Also, the oral supplements won’t age your skin and give you cancer in later life. Tanning will.

Robert asks…

Confession Booth?

I would like to confess a few things in a church in the confession booth this weekend. Does anyone know which churches have it and do they judge you or help you out when you confess? I really need help and I am willing to do anything to get out of this mess I’m in.

vti answers:

I know you must be Catholic to confess and receive absolution from a Catholic Priest.

Why ever would the above person presume Catholicism got her into the mess she’s in. That’s just stupid.

Many times when a person confesses a certain sin they not only are absolved from the guilt of the sin but, they receive the grace to overcome the temptations to sin this way again. They will still be tempted but, they will have more of Jesus’ strength.

The Apostles were given this ministry from Jesus himself when he blew onto them and said “Receive the Holy Spirit, whose sins you shall forgive, will be forgiven, and whose sins you shall retain shall be retained.”. This has been passed down through the ages. It is a marvelous thing. It is how the salt that has lost its saltiness becomes salty again.

What were Charles Booths main findings?

We were set an assignment for history to do with Charles Booth, and I cant find anywhere online that outlines the three most significant findings of Charles Booths studies conducted in the late 1890’s. HELP ME!!!

vti answers:

Booth described the conditions under which various social classes lived. He tried to determine the causes of poverty and to show the relationship between poverty and depravity on the one hand and regularity of income and a decent way of living on the other hand. Regularity of income played the largest role in determining poverty status. Booth found that, of the 4,076 poor individuals he studied, 62 percent were paid low or irregular wages; 23 percent had large families or suffered from illness; and 15 percent squandered their earnings, drank excessively, or refused to work. In his research Booth drew on his own observations and those of clergymen of long service in their parishes, and he consulted records of schools and charitable organizations. Life and Labour contains a series of maps of London in which various colours indicate the degree of poverty of each street. Especially concerned with the aged, Booth advocated old-age pensions for all rather than just for persons whose incomes were below a certain standard.

Mark asks…

FACE TANNING BOOTHS!?

Hi, I was wondering if there is an analog to tanning beds but just for face. I do not want to tan my whole body, just the face. And if they are, in case you live in San Francisco, please let me know where I can find them! Thank you!

PS. I am aware of skin cancer and aging. So if you don’t have specific answer to my question do not answer it. Thanks.
Thank you! I thought so))

vti answers:

.I have never heard of ‘face tanning booths’ however in years past having ones own “sunlamp” wasn’t uncommon. Something like that might still be available that you could own and use as desired, at home. Do some research and see what you find.

I don’t think tanning salons would get enough business for faces only to make it profitable for them to offer that service. Most people who go want whole body or legs.

Good luck!

I know which is the minimum age but I need to know, according to the laws, until what age a person can vote. If you have the link, best.

Thank you very much for someone to help me:)

There isn’t a maximum age. As long as you are healthy enough to get to the voting booths then you can vote

Maria asks…

A few questions for a practising Herbalists?

Hello, I’d like to ask someone who would consider themselves a practising Herbalist what qualifications if any do you hold?

I know that to be part of an organisation that recognises Herbalists you should have a degree, but I read somewhere that legally you don’t need certain qualifications as there is no guideline, or is this just true when not practising medical herbalism?

I am hopefully going to complete diplomas through distance learning, some are two qualifications with ncfe at level 3.

Is herbalism your main or only source of income? Do you have a few consistent clients or are you more likely to be in contact with various people? How have you come to contact this people, or how have you made it so they can find you?

Thanks for sharing
Oops, sorry about the crappy way I wrote the question

vti answers:

I’m not sure if a diploma is necessary to be a practicing herbalist. Most people i know just apprentice for herbalists or take classes.

I live next to the only herbalist in town. She’s been doing it for 40 years and runs her business out of her house and at the farmer’s market. I know she doesn’t make much money and works very hard growing, harvesting, preparing, marketing and selling herbs and raising her kids. She gets a lot of customers and supplies to our local co-op. She also rents out 3 cabins plus tent space on her land for extra cash.

Herbalism is not a very lucrative business. It’s a wonderful thing to do and a great way to be close to nature and help people, but you wont get rich.

Helen asks…

I went to a Chinese herbalist yesterday….?

He took my pulse on both arms and hit the nail on the head describing the symptoms i have been having. he analyzed some things on paper and then told me to drink an herbal tea he was going to concoct that would take 2 hrs to make. i have to drink the tea twice per day, for 10 days

i did my own research and basically the tea is a kidney cleaser…but it is VERY BITTER to drink!

Can someone tell me about the “bitter herbs”? I want to know more about them.
Thanks.

vti answers:

You my dear are a very smart man. I have gone to a Chinese Herbalist for years. I have many health problems which do require an MD but my Sister is one and gave me a book on Chinese Herbal Medicine and I got hooked. I use teas and also take capsules that my herbalist makes for me. I was actually able to “do away” over 3/4 of all of my pain medication that I was taking before. I also use acupuncture and cupping.
Bitter Herbs work through your kidneys to cleanse them in a natural way to get the toxicity out of them. It may be very bitter, but very good for you. I would deal with the bitter because of the good it is doing for you.
Check out these two books ~ Traditional Chinese Medicine by Shelia McNamara and Asian Health Secrets (The Complete Guide to Asian Herbal Medicine) by Letha Hadady, D. Ac. I bought both books as I found them very handy and practical, especially the second one.
Peace & Love 🙂

James asks…

Is a career as an herbalist realistic?

I’m 19 years old and I’m going insane! I don’t know what I want to do as a career. I love herbalism and holistic health, but I’m afraid I cannot realistically make a living off of that. My second love is linguistics; I love languages and I love to communicate with other people, but I don’t want to lose my holistic disposition by doing office work. Plus I don’t know if the market is strong for either of these now. HELP!!!

vti answers:

I’m doing a Bachelor of Health Science in Naturopathy. It’s primarily nutrition and herbal medicine. Naturopaths here earn anywhere from $100 – $300 per hour. But obviously you have to build up clients to get to that point and earn a reputation. But anyone I know who’s already graduated gets work straight away, usually renting a room in an already established clinic and working for a boss. Also there are jobs for Naturopaths in dispensaries, because there are many brands and products which are ‘practitioner only’ and require a Naturopath to dispense them, like a pharmacist.. You can’t just buy them off the shelf. Also while you’re trying to get on your feet and find clients, many qualified (and student) Naturopaths work in vitamin/supplement/wellness stores as sales assistants. You get hired easily because of your knowledge about everything, and you can pick up clients through working.

It really depends where you live/are planning on working. If the market for natural health is not there then you will fail miserably and make no money. I heard there are some states in america where Naturopathy is banned. Which is ridiculous because nutrition and herbal medicine is evidence based medicine. But yeah, I can’t tell you what the market is, I have no idea where you even are. This is something you have to research. There is a huge market where I live in melbourne, Victoria, Australia, particularly in affluent suburbs and city.

My advise is only go into natural medicine if you have a passion for it, because it’s still reemerging and you will get a lot of criticism from a lot of ignorant people.

But what I have learned in my business classes is that upper class areas are definitely better for business with natural medicine. Lower class areas can’t afford it and usually don’t have the time/money to stick to a whole wellness plan… They usually just want a quick fix so they can keep going to work etc.

If you live in USA (which I assume so because usually only americans dont specify where they are as if its the only place that exists lol)… Well if you’re thinking of setting up a clinic, or working in one for someone else, in LA next to a bunch of organic shops and juice bars and fitness/wellness places… As opposed to setting up in the bible belt next to a mcdonalds, you tell me where would the better market be

As for just being a ‘herbalist’ – well I don’t exactly know what that entails. I don’t know what kind of qualification that would be. A Naturopath will be hired at a clinic over a herbalist. Because Naturopaths have a health science degree. I’m not sure you could do that with just herbs. It’s not really that beneficial to just use herbs on someone anyway – they usually have to change their diets and nutrition+herbs go together.

Lizzie asks…

would an herbalist know……?

if any herbs i am taking interacts with any medications?

would an herbalist know that?

vti answers:

If it’s an older drug, they will likely know if they have some sort of desk reference that is available to the general public (which I imagine most herbalists would, just in case).
Unfortunately, however, they won’t have access to a fully updated database of drug and supplement interactions unless they are licensed doctors or pharmacists. Granted, that would only be needed if the drug is new enough to not be in the reference book, but still.

Susan asks…

How do I get medical coupons, if I have medical insurance?

I know the question sounds stupid but, my husband and I just found out that we are having a baby in January. I have medical insurance, which does cover maternal care, with the exception of copay, and deductibles, all that good stuff. Although we have been trying for out lil miracle, it has been so long, that it surprised us when the test came out positive. My husband had some employment struggles and he is in the process of finding full-time employment. Which means for us that we are going to have a lot of medical bills that will be difficult to pay. My original question is can I get medical coupons if I am not making enough to support everything? Even though I have insurance?

vti answers:

Check with your Department of Health. You may be eligible for Medicaid–to cover the rest of your expenses. You may also be eligible for WIC to help with food for you and the baby. My husband and I struggled through the hospital bills with our first, just to find out we probably could have gotten some sort of assistance. Your hospital probably has payment options, as well. With our second child, we were able to pay all of our hospital bills right away–except for the BIG one. We’re making equal monthly payments for a year and not paying any interest.

Another thing you should look into is a Flexible Spending Account. If your company offers this as one of their benefits, sign up for it during the open enrollment period at the end of the year. Since your baby is due in January, this may be a real help. The way it works is: You estimate how much your medical bills come to for the year. You tell the FSA administrator that you want to have that amount in your FSA. You get that amount to spend UP FRONT. Then, you repay the amount out of your paycheck for the rest of the year–and that comes out before taxes. I have 2 kids and a husband that are on my benefits. I estimated that we’ll spend about $1040 on medical expenses. So, $20 a week comes out of my check for that–and since it’s pre-tax, I don’t even miss it. The rules of the account state that I can only use that money for medical, dental, prescriptions, and OTC medications for me and my dependents. And I have to be able to produce receipts for these expenditures when they request them for IRS reporting purposes. It is worth it, though.

Good luck and Congratulations!!

Betty asks…

How can I print off coupons from the net ?

My pc is out dated and I can’t download the coupon printer program to print off the online coupons. Read the second to last paragraph below….

The best coupon website that I have found is http://www.HotCouponWorld.com. It has loads of information about every type of coupon you are looking for. There is so much information that you really have to take the time and read through all the forums to get the full benefit.

I get a lot of great printable coupon links off of this forum http://www.hotcouponworld.com/forums/printables/ Tons of grocery and health and beauty coupons

This site has also helped me to match my coupons with sales at certain stores and if you read through the forums will teach you everything you need to know. I save the most money shopping to CVS which I always thought was too expensive. When you use their sales and their Extra Care Bucks rewards you actually get so much free and many times you get what is called an “overage” which is where with the discounts you actually earn money so you get things for free and they basically pay you to shop there. You do have to put some time into it at first but once you get the hang of it it’s like second nature. Here is a link to the drug store forums (Walgreens, RiteAid, CVS etc…) http://www.hotcouponworld.com/forums/drug-stores/

Also, another great thing is that they have forums for each grocery store. So you can click on which ever grocery store you want to shop at and you will see where people have already matched up coupons with the stores sales which is very helpful. (This is how you get a lot of food free or for very little money.) http://www.hotcouponworld.com/forums/grocery-stores/

This is another great way to get coupons… The following is a link to many different manufacturers. If you click on the “Contact Us” link on each website and just compliment their products or ask for coupons 75% or more will mail you coupons. Most of them are great coupons ( I just got 4 coupons for free Playtex tampons (6.99 value each). Because you do have to fill in your name and address you would want to use an auto fill program so that with a click of a button everything is filled in (ex. Name, address, email etc.) then all you have to do is write a personal message and hit send. I make up a generic message complimenting the product and save it on my computer. When I am requesting for coupons I just copy and paste that message so I don’t have to type anything. It takes all of maybe 15 seconds on each website for great return in coupons.

I know all of this information can really help you just have to take the time to read and teach yourself to really cut your grocery bill in half. I more then cut mine in half and that is not including the free name brand shampoo, conditioner, make up, face wash, body wash, and personal hygiene products.

Lizzie asks…

How can I save money on groceries with coupons in Canada like people do in the US?

I have watched show on US TV where shoppers save tons of money using coupons for their groceries. Is it possible to do the same here in Canada?
I am looking for coupons for groceries in Canada. I want them for free. Thanks

vti answers:

It is not as easy believe me, I clip them also, the Us has more due to the competition between grocery stores and food manufacturers, I would say like I do, sit down and write a list and pick 1 or 2 stores to shop at ( I shop at No Frills on Dufferin St/Bloor St and Price Chopper on Dupont St and once and a while FoodBasics at Dufferin and Dupont, here in Toronto, I live in the Annex area), I am a single former chef, diabetic and a lacto-ovo vegetarian now due to health issues, and find this is the best way, but do use the store coupons, flyer ones, magazine ones and any other you can find, with the rising costs of food, prices for dairy, bread and veg going up due to the fuel crisis, any place you can save is a benefit. And with the local veg and fruits in the summer it is easier, even buy extra and can, freeze or pickle to make ends meet like our parents and grandparents did in the 30’/40’s and 50’s, stretch the food budget were you can, I do and I am on disability to so I am on a fixed income.

Michael asks…

Suggestions on good for you foods at a low price?

I am trying to lose weight but it seems like all the good foods are expensive. Any meal ideas or just food ideas in general.

vti answers:

It will take time, but compare shop. Pre-packaged meals seem cheap. For the same amount of $ you can buy healthier ingredients and feed more people. Some cheap items I get are beans, frozen vegetables, pasta, in-season fresh fruits and vegetables. Check out different grocery stores too. I go to three different groceries. One for cans, frozen vegetables and some produce. Another for their health food selection. Then there is Wall-mart for everything else. I also use coupons on items that are also on sale. I grow a garden in a very small yard. I feed eight people for $500.00 a month. No eating out!! Yes, that is Food stamps.

Carol asks…

Can anyone give me tips on food shopping?

My boyfriend is on a very strict diet; he’s got too high cholesterol and he’s obese, so he has this one nutritionist who gave him a list of foods he can have and foods to avoid for losing weight, as well as a chart of how many servings of what food group to eat when, tailored to his eating habits; his doctor gave him a second list of foods to eat and foods to avoid for his cholesterol; and he’s been advised to watch his sodium. He needs low-sodium foods with low saturated fat and low cholesterol, no cheese, he doesn’t eat eggs– and he’s a college student barely scraping money together to shop at all, so it needs to be cheap. Any suggestions?
Basically, the way he shops, when he has money (his parents give him a small amount for his rent so he can continue in school, plus he’s now got a parttime job to supplement), he goes shopping for maybe 20-40 dollars worth of groceries, which he does maybe twice a month, and supplements with fast food when his groceries run out, because food and gas are competing for his $$

vti answers:

My advice is to shop the perimeter of the grocery store, that is where most of the healthy foods are located. I don’t know what is all on his list of what to eat and what not to eat, from both the nutritionist and doctor, but I assume it would include lots of foods from the produce area like fresh fruits and vegetables, the meat department where you will find poultry and fish, and then the aisles where he can get things like low-sodium canned tuna and canned salmon, whole grain breads and whole grains (like brown rice and rolled oats), nuts, seeds, and legumes (lentils, black beans), and then healthy fats like olive oil- all naturally low in sodium, saturated fat, and cholesterol.

Processed food and fast food can be really cheap, but it is loaded with hydregenated oils, sodium, and sugars, all of the things he should avoid, and they are usually located in the middle of the store- all the packaged junk foods, cookies, crackers, chips, candy, etc.

If you shop the sales, use coupons, buy generic when it is an option, buy some items in bulk, and cook at home it can be affordable. It will require a lot of organization, planning ahead, and basic cooking skills, but it can be done- and good health is the reward.

Jenny asks…

What’s the difference between holistic nutrition and going to university?

I’m trying to decide between one of these two schools:
http://csnn.ca/programs/

Certification

But I can’t really decide if it’s worth it? If you’re becoming a nutritionist, why not just go to one of these schools instead of university where you will just pay more.

vti answers:

I don’t think it matters either way. People don’t exactly hyper check the credentials of nutritionists.

George asks…

Antibiotic Diarrhea, Probiotics & Nutrition.?

O.k., I will try to make this as short as possible, but may not be possible. Finished my 2nd round of antibiotics almost 3 weeks or so ago. The 2nd day of taking Erythromycin (which I dont recommend) and never really taking antibiotics before I developed a pretty good case of diarrhea, not terrible just loose with a little water and some chunks. After about 1.5 weeks of finishing them, I began taking probiotics and the diarrhea subsided so I thought everything was cool. So, I tried to get back to my normal diet of mostly raw fruits and veges and alot of grain. I had some cabbage, a salad, some grapes and 2 oranges. Well, guess what? It was not yet time to go full force into it, and it all ran right through me. I got back on the Brat Diet and everything returned to normal. So here are my problems.
A. The doctor gave me no instructions on taking the antibiotics (Great Doc) I had no clue that they would mess me up as bad as they did. I later learned that the antibiotics are some of the worst for messing up your normal Flora.
B. When I called the pharmacist at night, he told me to take Immodium! Most of you know that Anti-Diarrheals only stop you up, leave the toxins in your body longer and make things worse.
C. After I finished the anibiotics and still had loose stool, I asked about probiotics. He told me that they are all the same and to eat whatever I wanted. I quickly learned that they arent all the same, they can have 1 mil count up to 50 bil count. Only when I went back and got a better probiotic, did it start working. And I found out quickly that I couldnt eat anything I wanted.
So, I told you all of that to ask you this. I have been on this Brat Diet for a few weeks now. I am very active and feel sorta Blah with not getting all the vitamins from the raw foods. I hate white bread and white rice and dont get the energy I need from it. I am thinking about introducing some cooked broccoli and berries. I dont really like taking supplements, but I guess I could. So, how would you reccomend I get some vitamins back in my body without having another relapse? I feel pretty good right now, and feel like the worse is over, but I still dont want to push it. You think juicing would be alright? And is there any vitamins that may interact with probiotics. Thanks again for reading my rambling.

vti answers:

Why don’t you just go see a Naturopath? Whatever health issues you have can be cleared up without antibiotics. MDs don’t get any training in nutrition and especially not holistic nutrition. Conditions like IBS, etc. Can be cured with the right probiotics and probably some homeopathy.
The Brat diet sounds like a sure trip to crappy overall health.
Vitamins don’t interact with probiotics but you should take them a couple of hours apart, and all probiotics are not created equal.
The best single food to regulate your system when you have diarrhea or constipation is organic unsweetened apple sauce.(For dogs it’s pure pumpkin. Even if the vet knows they’d rather sell you their stuff at $10 a can.) The idea is to balance, not suppress or oppose.

What is the best college for holistic nutrition in Canada?

HEAL THY SELF, call a few homeopaths, get some recamendations.

Joseph asks…

Candae or Holistic?

Which food is better Candae or Holistic and why, or are they both almost the same?
Sorry I meant Canidae
To Shasta: your answer based on my looks says enough about who is retarded
It is Holistic by Eagle Pack
Thank you guys all for an honest answer, I recently changed to Holistic from Eagle Pack and I wanted to know more about Canidae as it was recommended to me by weimaraner breeder, we’ll try Canidae as well and see which one my baby likes more 🙂

vti answers:

Canidae is a holistic brand of food. I feed it to my french bulldog and she is doing fantastic on it! Good teeth, beautiful coat, great weight.

I always recommend going with a premium dog food. You are going to pay more for it, but you’ll be saving money in the long run. The ingredients are human grade, the ingredients come from a consistant source, you don’t have to feed as much because each bite is full of quality nutrition.

Other good holistic foods are: Wellness, Innova, Eagle Pack Holistic, California Natural, Natures Balance, Solid Gold, Fromm’s, Merrick, etc.
You want to learn to read ingredients. Avoid foods that have “by-products”, “ground corn”, “BHA or BHT” in it. These premium foods are not something you will find in a grocery or a discount store

Carol asks…

where can I find a good online program where i can get my herbology degree?

Also whats the difference between Holistic Nutrition Degree and Natural Health Degree?

vti answers:

There is no credible “herbology” degree.

The “real” herbology degree is called “Pharmacognosy”.

There is no difference between “Holistic Nutrition Degree” and “Natural Health Degree”. They are both bogus degrees offered by worthless online “schools”.

James asks…

How to ease tension at home with natural remedies?

is there any home remedy medication to avoid stress …

vti answers:

Simple Home Remedies to Reduce Stress

1.Sip a chamomile infusion:
Put 2 Tablespoons of dried chamomile, loose chamomile flowers in a teapot (or French press), fill with boiling water, steep for 5 minutes, then strain and drink. You might also add some honey. Chamomile has been used for reducing stress, relaxation and soothing upset tummies. If you know you’re going to have a stressful day – drink chamomile tea early and often.

2.Stress Relief Spray:
In a portable spray bottle combine some rosewater (or distilled water), and a few drops of lavender oil. Shake to combine.Mist your face or your general environment as needed, and enjoy the relaxing aroma.

3.Take an aromatherapy bath:
Baths are relaxing enough, but for some extra stress-relief, I like to add a handful of epsom salts and 10 drops of essential oil to the running bath. You can use the lavender/clary sage mix as above, add some Rose essential oil. Just keep it to 10 drops total.Soak for 20 minutes, then towel off and apply.

4.Stress relief body oil:
For a super simple body oil, combine 1/2 cup sweet almond oil with 10 drops total of your favorite essential oils.Try Rose, or for a more masculine scent, add some Sandalwood. Pour into a pretty bottle and use as a moisturizer after your bath or shower.

5.Drink some water:
I know it’s not exciting, but when you’re feeling stressed make sure you’re hydrating yourself throughout the day. Having enough water helps your body function at its peak, and also helps to flush out any toxins. Drinking enough water also helps stabilize your mood and prevents the energy slump that comes from dehydration.

6.Eat some green, leafy veg:
Greens are the most nutrient dense food, and we often don’t eat enough of them.In times of stress, making sure you boost your intake of green leafy vegetables like broccoli, spinach will ensure you body gets the nutrients it needs to handle the stress!

Consider relaxation techniques
Relaxation techniques can reduce symptoms of stress, including headaches. Making time for pleasurable activities, such as listening to music, dancing, playing a sport, reading a book or playing with your pet can help. In addition, set aside time, even if it’s just 10 minutes a day, to practice relaxation. Techniques include:

1.Meditation
2.Yoga
3.Deep breathing

Also, to reduce stress daily, consider these tips:

1.Simplify your life:
Rather than looking for ways to squeeze more activities or chores into the day, leave some things out. Ask yourself what really needs to be done, what can wait and what you can drop. It’s OK to say no.

2.Seek support:
Talking things out with family or friends or allowing them to help you through a difficult time can help you manage stress. Talking to a therapist might help, as well.

3.Manage your time wisely:
Update your to-do list every day — both at work and at home. Delegate what you can and break large projects into manageable chunks. Tackle the rest, one task at a time.

4.Be prepared:
Organize your day. Anticipate challenges. Try to keep your plan flexible, in case a headache strikes and you need to change course.Let go. Try not to worry about things you can’t control.

5.Adjust your attitude:
If you find yourself thinking, “This can’t be done,” stop yourself. Think instead, “This will be tough. But I can make it work.” Putting a positive spin on negative thoughts can help you work through stressful situations. If you need help with this process, consider cognitive behavioral therapy.

6.Take a break:
If you feel overwhelmed, take some time to clear your mind. A few slow stretches or a brisk walk may renew your energy for the task at hand. Or take a mental vacation. Imagine yourself in a calm, relaxing place.

7.Exercise regularly:
Exercise is a proven way to prevent — and sometimes treat — headaches. Exercise also provides a break from the stress of daily life. Be careful to warm up slowly. Sudden, intense exercise can cause headaches.

8.Eat smart:
A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains can give you more energy and help keep stress under control.

9.Get adequate sleep:
Stress can interfere with sleep, but lack of sleep can hamper your ability to cope with stress. Lack of sleep puts your body under stress and may trigger the release of stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol, during the day.

10.Laugh:
Humor is a great way to relieve stress. Laughter releases endorphins, natural substances that help you feel better and maintain a positive attitude. Don’t know what to laugh about? Try watching funny movies or reading a funny book.

11.Change the pace:
Break away from your routine and try something new. A vacation or weekend getaway may help you develop a new outlook.

12.Break bad habits:
If you smoke, quit. Cut down on caffeine and, if you drink alcohol, don’t overdo.
Recognize when it’s more than stress
