Carol asks…

Ferret food question?

Well i have been looking around and 1 and 8 nad totally ferret seem to be the best brands and alot of people mix the food so would it work if i mixed the two brands together and fed both. Also how much should i feed 3 ferrets do i just keep unlimited supply of food? How long do you think 8 puonds of food would last 3 ferrets giving the amount that you suggest or they will eat free feeding. Thanks for your help. 🙂

vti answers:

8 in 1 isn’t the best. The best ferret foods have the first 3 ingredients listed as meat and as high a protein level as possible. 8 in 1 has ONE out of three listed as meat, or 2 out of 3 for the other formulation. This isn’t a good start its a poor quality food. Its also rich in carbs, this is VERY bad for ferrets and can cause health problems long term. Totally Ferret isn’t great either, in fact probably inferior to 8 in 1’s only one ingredient meat in the first 3.

There are only 3 foods worth feeding. Well 4, but the 4th is the raw meat and bones diet which is far superior to other diets but most people wont feed it because of inconvenience even though it can extend the life of your ferrets a considerable amount. Anyway, the three dried foods are:

Evo ferret: http://www.ferret.com/item/evo-dry-ferret-food-66-lbs/650912/ Evo Kitten is also suitable if evo ferret isn’t available in your area, they are almost the same nutritionally.

Pretty Pets Natural Gold: http://www.ferretdepot.com
/prettypetsnaturalgold_hipro_locarb_ingredientlist.shtml This food isn’t quite as good as only 2 of the first 3 ingredients are meat but its still superior to most other brands.

The final food is a cat or kitten food but is perfect for ferrets too: http://www.orijen.ca/orijen/products/catkittenIngredients.aspx Orijen cat and kitten.

Ferrets should eat about 46-60 grams of food a day each…but some do stash and spill quite a lot too so its hard to quantify how much they would use.

I am based in the UK and my ferrets get the meat and bones diet with some Orijen added but I know a lot about ferrets and if I was in the US, these are the best foods to feed. Don’t scrimp on ferret food the right one can make a huge difference to their health!

Linda asks…

why did my cat use to abuse her food supply?

see, heres the thing, when she used to have an unlimited food supply, she would start to eat SO much that she threw up. Now, i limit her food to a certian amount a day. Why did she use to abuse her food supply?

vti answers:

Just like human, it is called gluttony. And this is the number one reason why obesity in cats are on the rise. When given an unlimited supply of food 24/7, cat will eat to the point of throwing up (like yours) because they can. An indoor cat who receive little to no stimulation will turn to eating. When there is no environment enrichment, your cat will choose to be a couch potato and eat herself silly – what else can she do besides eating?

Also, there is a theory that because cats are hunters, they are hard wired to think that food supply are limited and when there is a huge amount of food present, they have to eat as much as they could because they do not know when the next meal is going to be.

You are wise to switch to meal feeding times. This will improve her health tremendously and discourage mindless eating. Also, try to look into the benefit of feeding just wet food. It is so much better and species appropriate. To help you out, here are some really good and well researched websites to get you started:-

Maria asks…

Non commercial food for my rabbit?

I want to feed my rabbit human food because she pick out the stuff she like in her rabbit food and wasted most of it.

Can someone give me a list of foods I can give her?

Please answer the question if you feed your rabbit non commercial foods. Thanks

vti answers:

If you are using pellets that have, seeds, nuts, dried fruit, dried corn and or colored crunchy thing toss it out… Things that are attractive to our human eyes, but very unhealthy to a rabbit. This food is bad for rabbits because they do just that, they pick out the naughty foods and will not eat the pellet… Naughty foods can contribute to fatty liver disease, cecal dysbiosis, obesity, and otherwise cause health problems.

Some types of seeds have hulls that are indigestible to a rabbit, and can cause life-threatening intestinal, along with corn, Corn, fresh or dried, is NOT safe for rabbits.

Don’t feed your rabbit cookies, crackers, nuts, seeds, corn, candy, bread, oats, breakfast cereals (including oatmeal)

Hay, Perhaps the single most important item in the rabbit diet is grass HAY, and it should be fed in unlimited quantities to rabbits…

Depending on the age of your rabbit, he/she should be eating fresh moist greens daily. If your rabbit is not used to them you will have to start off giving him/her a little at a time.. Add one item at a time, in small amounts, and if you see no intestinal upset, add another.

Adult rabbits should have in there diets 2-4 cups of fresh greens ( veggies) daily.. Fresh, moist greens are about as important as hay in maintaining a healthy intestine. Give starchy vegetables (e.g., carrots) in moderation, and use bits of fruit only in very, very small quantities, as special treats. Too much sugar and starch can cause cecal dysbiosis, and all its associated problems.

Veggies List For Rabbits…..

Arugula
Carrot tops
Cucumber leaves
Endive
Ecarole
Frisee Lettuce
Kale (all types)
Red or green lettuce
Romaine lettuce
Spring greens
Turnip greens

Can I sell home made fudge with out a food liesence?

vti answers:

Tom is not quite correct!! You cannot sell any food without a license, but they are for 30 days up to a year. They are NOT unlimited time in New Mexico. Check with your department of health, foods and drinks division. Our inspectors are quite severe on those not complying.

A bunch of us go to one of the school cafeterias or churches that have inspected and approved kitchens to make bake sale items, benefit dinners, consession stand foods, etc.

What are the different types of jobs in the medical field?

I am 17 and thinking about studying to become a nurse when I go to college because I don’t want to go to grad school. I heard that after college nurses can easily get a job and make alot of money. Sandra asks…

What kind of medical jobs are available for someone with these interests?

I want to be in the medical field, and I enjoy holistic nutrition and health. Blood doesn’t bother me, but I don’t want to be a surgeon who is in surgery everyday maybe once or twice a week is fine. I want to be able to work with all ages of people and I think it would be fun to help research cancer prevention and cures. I also want to help people like myself with cystic acne that is curable through medications to find healthier approaches to clear skin. Your help is appreciated. Thanks for your time.

How long does it take to become a nurse ?

If I get 5 gcses and two Alevels Can I go to uni and study to be an Adult nurse ?

How long does it take to get a degree to become a nurse ?

Whats the highest paid type of nurse, is it a consultant nurse?

any information on study time, what it involves , uniform etc woul be great thanks .

vti answers:

Ok well here are the basics :
Work Activities
Adult nurses care for people over the age of 16 who have a long- or short-term illness. They work either in hospitals or in the wider community.

Wherever they are based, adult nurses are part of a multi-disciplinary team, which includes other nurses, health care assistants, doctors, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and many others. They are responsible for planning and implementing the complete nursing care of their patients.

When a patient arrives on the ward, the nurse responsible for them assesses their nursing requirements and draws up a care plan, which outlines their needs and treatment schedule. Nurses observe the effectiveness of treatment and modify the care plan accordingly.

Nursing care is ‘holistic’ in that it looks after a patient’s needs comprehensively. This may include essential care, like washing and feeding, or technical care, like administering medication, checking blood pressure, inserting or removing drips or changing dressings.

Increasingly, complex equipment is being used to assist with patient care, and nurses are often responsible for monitoring this. They also record their observations and any treatment they give.

Some nurses may concentrate on health promotion work. For instance, they help patients to regain or retain their independence, which allows them to continue living at home.

Personal qualities
You need to have good communication skills – partly so that you can work effectively in a team and partly so you can reassure patients and involve them in care planning

Pay and Opportunities
National Health Service (NHS) employees are paid on a rising scale within defined pay bands, according to their skills and responsibilities.

On the Agenda for Change pay scales a newly qualified nurse is on Band 5. From April 1, 2009 this has been £20,710 – £26,839 a year. A nurse team leader is on Band 6 (£24,831 – £33,436), while a nurse team manager is on Band 7 (£29,091 – £38,352 a year).

At the highest levels, nurse consultants can earn up to £65,657, depending on responsibilities.

Qualifications
It is generally thought that most entry criteria for a diploma course will require candidates to possess around 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) of Grade C and above including english literature or language and a science subject. Nursing degree courses usually require candidates to have gained at least 2 A-Level qualifications or equivalent.

Hope this helps 🙂

Anyone have a good home remedy to help with the cough?

My sister had an upper respitory infection last week and she feels better but her coughing has not stopped and she’s at her wit’s end with this! Anyone know of a good home remedy?

vti answers:

I am in the same boat! Every time I get sick, I end up with a cough for a couple weeks. My doc says it’s the body getting rid of congestion built up while fighting the virus. Sounds like she’s doing what I do. I haven’t come up with anything that lasts a long time, but home remedies are usually safe enough to use as needed. I do know alot of people recommend cherry bark and slippery elm tea; these can probably be found at a health food store and directions should be followed like taking medicine. My favorite, though, is juice of half a lemon (fresh ones work better than bottled juice) in hot water, with honey added. Something about it does a better job at calming those tickle-spasm coughs that I can’t stop with a cough drop. Hot liquids help in general, but this hot lemon thing is best. At night, I add a shot of strong whiskey or bourbon to it. For some reason I get better cough relief from hard liquor than actual medicine! I’m guessing the alcohol relaxes spasms in my throat. Hope she’s feeling better soon!

Mandy asks…

How to ease tension at home with natural remedies?

is there any home remedy medication to avoid stress …

vti answers:

Simple Home Remedies to Reduce Stress

1.Sip a chamomile infusion:
Put 2 Tablespoons of dried chamomile, loose chamomile flowers in a teapot (or French press), fill with boiling water, steep for 5 minutes, then strain and drink. You might also add some honey. Chamomile has been used for reducing stress, relaxation and soothing upset tummies. If you know you’re going to have a stressful day – drink chamomile tea early and often.

2.Stress Relief Spray:
In a portable spray bottle combine some rosewater (or distilled water), and a few drops of lavender oil. Shake to combine.Mist your face or your general environment as needed, and enjoy the relaxing aroma.

3.Take an aromatherapy bath:
Baths are relaxing enough, but for some extra stress-relief, I like to add a handful of epsom salts and 10 drops of essential oil to the running bath. You can use the lavender/clary sage mix as above, add some Rose essential oil. Just keep it to 10 drops total.Soak for 20 minutes, then towel off and apply.

4.Stress relief body oil:
For a super simple body oil, combine 1/2 cup sweet almond oil with 10 drops total of your favorite essential oils.Try Rose, or for a more masculine scent, add some Sandalwood. Pour into a pretty bottle and use as a moisturizer after your bath or shower.

5.Drink some water:
I know it’s not exciting, but when you’re feeling stressed make sure you’re hydrating yourself throughout the day. Having enough water helps your body function at its peak, and also helps to flush out any toxins. Drinking enough water also helps stabilize your mood and prevents the energy slump that comes from dehydration.

6.Eat some green, leafy veg:
Greens are the most nutrient dense food, and we often don’t eat enough of them.In times of stress, making sure you boost your intake of green leafy vegetables like broccoli, spinach will ensure you body gets the nutrients it needs to handle the stress!

Consider relaxation techniques
Relaxation techniques can reduce symptoms of stress, including headaches. Making time for pleasurable activities, such as listening to music, dancing, playing a sport, reading a book or playing with your pet can help. In addition, set aside time, even if it’s just 10 minutes a day, to practice relaxation. Techniques include:

1.Meditation
2.Yoga
3.Deep breathing

Also, to reduce stress daily, consider these tips:

1.Simplify your life:
Rather than looking for ways to squeeze more activities or chores into the day, leave some things out. Ask yourself what really needs to be done, what can wait and what you can drop. It’s OK to say no.

2.Seek support:
Talking things out with family or friends or allowing them to help you through a difficult time can help you manage stress. Talking to a therapist might help, as well.

3.Manage your time wisely:
Update your to-do list every day — both at work and at home. Delegate what you can and break large projects into manageable chunks. Tackle the rest, one task at a time.

4.Be prepared:
Organize your day. Anticipate challenges. Try to keep your plan flexible, in case a headache strikes and you need to change course.Let go. Try not to worry about things you can’t control.

5.Adjust your attitude:
If you find yourself thinking, “This can’t be done,” stop yourself. Think instead, “This will be tough. But I can make it work.” Putting a positive spin on negative thoughts can help you work through stressful situations. If you need help with this process, consider cognitive behavioral therapy.

6.Take a break:
If you feel overwhelmed, take some time to clear your mind. A few slow stretches or a brisk walk may renew your energy for the task at hand. Or take a mental vacation. Imagine yourself in a calm, relaxing place.

7.Exercise regularly:
Exercise is a proven way to prevent — and sometimes treat — headaches. Exercise also provides a break from the stress of daily life. Be careful to warm up slowly. Sudden, intense exercise can cause headaches.

8.Eat smart:
A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains can give you more energy and help keep stress under control.

9.Get adequate sleep:
Stress can interfere with sleep, but lack of sleep can hamper your ability to cope with stress. Lack of sleep puts your body under stress and may trigger the release of stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol, during the day.

10.Laugh:
Humor is a great way to relieve stress. Laughter releases endorphins, natural substances that help you feel better and maintain a positive attitude. Don’t know what to laugh about? Try watching funny movies or reading a funny book.

11.Change the pace:
Break away from your routine and try something new. A vacation or weekend getaway may help you develop a new outlook.

12.Break bad habits:
If you smoke, quit. Cut down on caffeine and, if you drink alcohol, don’t overdo.
Recognize when it’s more than stress

Natural remedies?????????

Are there any natural remedies or vitamins i can take instead of anti-depressants and sleeping pills?

vti answers:

Hello.

Hope you are fine.

Natural Remedies for Insomnia – Sleeping Pills:

below are 3 natural remedies for insomnia that will have you sleeping better in no time at all. These 3 natural remedies for insomnia will prove that sleeping pills are only for dummies.

Natural Insomnia Remedies

1. One of the best natural insomnia remedies around is a warm bath with added herbal oil. Obviously, the bath oil can’t just be any common oil – it has to be a herbal oil which is known for it’s sleep inducing effects; I.E. Lavender, passionflower, Valerian, etc. The aroma from the oil will help you to relax and get comfortable. Combine that relaxation with the herbal oil’s inherent sleep inducing properties, and you’ll be ready for sleep within minutes rather than hours.

2. Another great herbal remedy for insomnia is deep massage. A massage will not only relax you by relieving tension and stress, but it will also help to put you in the right “mood” for sleep — a more comfortable “I’m 100% ready to go to bed” type of mood. A full body massage with herbal massage oils is best, but even a light shoulder rub is better than nothing at all.

3. Of all the natural remedies for insomnia, herbal tea combined with sound sleep tracks has to be the best. Why aren’t these remedies separate? Why are they combined and called one remedy? Simply because most people find it’s an effective one-two punch for dealing with insomnia quickly and effectively.

Basically, prepare a cup of your favorite insomnia herbal tea (chamomile, Valerian, passionflower, etc.) and head off to bed while drinking it slowly. Once the tea has been drunk, put in the sleep track CD/tape/mp3, turn it on, and then slide into bed. The tea will calm your body & nerves and induce a strong sleepiness in you, while the sound waves from the sleep track will try to get your brain on a more natural rhythm to help you sleep.

Hope this helps you . Thank you.

Sharon asks…

How many scientists actually study natural remedies?

I’m quite curious. I read about doctors and scientists talking shit about natural remedies, but how many of them actually study these natural remedies and medicines? Because usually, I hear about some other scientist that discovers that the product is a lot healthier than before mentioned. So, do scientists actually study these plants and such, before talking shit about them?

vti answers:

1) Some natural remedies do not actually contain the specified dosage, thus they should not be sold or consumed.

2) Some natural remedies have been studied and found ineffective

3) A few (a very small percentage) of natural remedies might work, according to tests done to date.

i am just 17 and my hair is falling drastically..i never used any chemicals on my hairs..jst mild shampoo and oil..i have also dandruff, all round the year..my hair has already thinned a lot…please help me…
give some natural remedies

vti answers:

Hair loss is a metabolic disorder where hair starts thinning, falling, or disappearing. The papilla which is an upgrowth at the base of the follicle, actually produces hair when a special group of cells turn amino acids into keratin, a type of protein of which hair is made. The rate of production of these protein ‘building blocks’ determines hair growth. Hair loss is more common to men than to women.

Symptoms of Hair Loss

Following are the major hair loss symptoms:

1. Falling of hairs.
2. Thinning of hairs

Causes of Hair Loss

Following are the major hair loss causes:

1. Lack of vitamins (specially vitamin B6 and folic acid) in diet
2. Inadequate nutrition and improper diet
3. Stress, worry, anxiety, and sudden shock
4. Heredity factors
5. Prolonged Illness (like typhoid, syphilis, chronic cold, influenza, and anaemia)
6. Unclean condition of the scalp
7. Poor blood circulation

Natural Home Remedies for Hair Loss

Following are some of the effective home remedies for hair loss:

1. Boil one cup mustard oil with four tablespoon heena (mehendi) leaves. Filter it and keep it in a bottle. Message it on the bald patches regularly. It is very effective natural remedy for baldness.
2. Grind fenugreek seeds with water and apply on the head. Leave for at least 40 minutes before washing. Continue it for a month.
3. Do a vigorous rubbing of the scalp with fingers after washing the hair with cold water. It is also a good natural hair loss treatment.
4. Rub the bald area with onions till it becomes red. Then apply honey on the bald area. It is very effective natural cure for baldness
5. Make a mixture of honey with egg yolk. Properly massage on the scalp and hairs. Leave for a 1/2 hour, then wash
6. Prepare a home made shampoo by adding 5 tbsp of curd, 1 tbsp of lemon juice and 2 tbsp of gram raw (chholia) powder. Apply it on the head for an hour and then wash
7. Apply fresh leaf juice of amaranth to the hair. It will help the growth of the hair and keep it soft.

Home remedies for cough?

I am coughing for two days, but i can’t go to a doctor because he is not working on weekends… What are some good home remedies for that?

vti answers:

Hi Jelena,

Cough is a very common medical problem. You have not stated your age or the type of cough. Productive coughs (coughs which result in the production of phlegm or sputum) are generally due to chest infections or old age (heart failure). There is no evidence of your age in your question but my gut feeling is that you are young and therefore you are not in heart failure.

If you have an elevated temperature and your cough is productive you will do well to see a doctor as I am guessing that you have a chest infection.

If you have an irritating cough which is not productive you probably have an allergy or have been exposed to one or more irritants.

If it is an allergy problem then you need to take an anti histamine. If you have been exposed to an irritant like smoke or dust then you need to rest and keep warm. Drink plenty of water. Good luck.

Robert asks…

home remedies to relive coughing?

I have had a cough for 3-4 days now. Coughing up mucus and everything and Im tired of trying syrups…Any good home remedies??
Thanks for the tips, Ill try them for sure.

vti answers:

Well this does work but not all of the time, try a spoon full of salt not too much but a almost a spoon ful then drink some warm water or room tempurature water. It helps the cough go away but not for too long try it.also drinking cold stuff doesnt help and niether does taking in big deep breath they will just make you cough more.also hummidity helps make the cough lighter and less painfull so you should buy a hummidifyer and put it neer your bed at night it helps everytime you breath in and by the next day thier should be a big difference preferably “vix vapor” not the vapor rub.Avoid dairy products, meats, and fried foods since They increase the production of mucus. Try to eat spicy foods, such as hot peppers because they help break up mucus so it is easier to expectorate.A hot bath or shower will soothe irritated airways and loosen sinus congestion so good luck. Also try not talking too much or too loudly less stress on your cough. You shoul also try to eat things with more iron so they can hgelp get rid of cough and reduce the possibility of getting it agian. Abviously stop smoking if you already do and stay away from any smoke.Studies have shown that honey can treat coughs more effectively than over-the-counter medicines. “Mix with a little warm water or put into some non-caffeinated herbal tea “good luck hope you feel better

vti answers:

The following works for sinus, cold, running nose, sore throat and strep throat, when the throat is hurting and lot of other conditions.

The most visible thing about sinus is swelling. In case of cold, sore throat, strep throat also swelling is there but to some less extent then it is visible in sinus.

Sinus, cold and sore throat usually happen in the following situations –

– Change of season, drinking lot of water after exercises, when u get up in the morning, after swimming, after having first sex, kissing, first time smoking etc.

The reason – The body has limited capacity to store water in places other hen cells and in blood systems. When we suddenly drink lot of water, that must be stored in the cells within a short period. If that does not happen the body tries to lose water through frequent urination, running nose, cough etc. This excess water is stored in layers of skin or muscles. This stored water outside cells reduces the cell metabolism drastically. That also causes the immune system to be done causing the bacteria growth. That does not need antibiotics. All it needs is reabsorption of that water in cells or blood system. That is possible only by reducing the water intake temporarily.

During winters the cells of our body stores less water. This is evident from frequent loss of water from body throuhurination. Normally.

Another thing that needs explanation is – why does sore throat happens in the morning often. The cellular metabolism is at 5 to 10% during sleep. So the excess water stored between layers of skin and muscles causes the metabolism to fall below the minimum threshold limit. That reduces the immune capacity of the body drastically.

The same thing happens after swimming the body is heated up and cooled at the same time. It a person allows sweating after a swimming session and does not drink water or does not take a shower in cold water sore throat may not happen.

After having first sex, kissing, first time smoking people tend to either overeat, drink lot of water and sleep immediately so sinus or sore throat happens.

The easier way out is to allow body to sweat for 1 or 2 hour by increasing the body temperature but not drinking water or other fluids for may be 1 hour after that. But since cell metabolism is low during this period of cold and sinus, a person will seem to be excessively thirsty even after a short session of small exercise. Thru cell metabolism the water is transferred to blood system. If that happens at a rate slower then required rate the cells may overheat causing excessive thirst.

The other easy way to control swelling is to give up water and all other liquids for 24 hours. In 24 hours there will be no significant dehydration to cause organ failure. But to be double sure one can stay indoors for 24 hours. This helps in lot of other ailments. One can do it when one is indoors. It improves the immune system. It ensures that body’s control systems work properly.

In 24 hours the reduction in the fluids will be about 3 litres or about 5% of the total body weight of a normal adult.

Never the swelling due to sinus or cold and cough is more than 5% of the body volume.

During this period of 24 hours the lose of water from the body does not reduce even by 1% to offset reduced water intake.

The reduction in loss of body water thru urine or sweating starts after 48 hours in most of people. But to be on safe side giving up water and liquids for 24 hours will do the trick.

The reduced swelling will give immediate relief from pain. It will make is much more easier to eliminate the cough thru nose without any pain.

That will also improve the blood acid levels by about 10%. This makes changes at the cell level as well. Blood acid levels are the first line of defense against the infections.

So swelling gone, pain gone, cough moving out, infections taken care of. Now what remains in the body for the next change of season time. Obviously nothing.

So it has already given u long term relief from sinus. But in some cases one may get sinus during next change of season and may have to do this again. The benefits of drinking lot of water is over hyped. So when winter starts to set in, people still force drink more water. Same thing happens when summer is setting in. As soon as summer comfort is there on increases the water intake drastically. But the cells of the body still does not need that excess supply of water.

George asks…

Alternative medicines and/or home remedies for depression?

I have already come to the conclusion that I have clinical depression.Although I never been officially diagnosed,it is quite obvious and has been proven by multiple online tests.Over the past month,I have been taking “St. John’s Wart” religiously and using aroma therapy to help with the symptoms. My mother is against taking me to the doctor due to her disapproval of modern medicine. She asks that I search online for alternative, natural medicines and home remedies.Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.Thank you!

vti answers:

I have a number of friends that have found success with Amoryn, so I’m more than happy to help spread the word about this product. It’s an all-natural supplement designed to help with feelings of depression. Amoryn’s formula contains Rhodiola Rosea, 5-HTP, and St. John’s Wort, among other ingredients. You can learn more about these ingredients and why they’re included in the Amoryn formula at http://www.amoryn.com/advantage.html. This website is actually has a lot of useful info, so take some time to look around.

St Johns Wort seems to be one of the few supplements that has a substantial amount of clinical research behind it. If you’re looking for a St. John’s Wort (SJW) product, it’s my understanding that’s important to find one that’s been standardized for hyperforin. This is main active component responsible for reducing symptoms of depression. Here’s a link to a clinical research study published in a reputable medical journal discussing the importance of hyperforin – http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15492771

Another great resource is the Kelly’s St. John’s Wort Blog – http://www.sjwinfo.org/

Try Google-ing “Alternative Supplement for Depression” – There’s some good info there about how to naturally overcome depression without prescription medications.

Start there and continue learning about different alternatives. Everyone’s different, so the best long-term approach is to continue educating yourself and find what works best for you.

Hopefully this information is of some help. All the best!

David asks…

What is a good way to curb depression without meds?

Ok…i am 31, and i am also bipolar. I used to take meds to curb depression cause the military made me but they made me feel worse. nothing tragic has happend in my life well nothing i would consider tragic that is. my bouts of maina are getting worse and depression is more frequent. What is a good way to help with depression that will not involve taking mood altering(which make it worse) pills? foods maybe?

vti answers:

Left untreated, bipolar disorder will escalate over time. That’s just the nature of the beast. If you were on antidepressants, these can sometimes induce manic episodes. You may just need to find a different medication. I was on Depakote and really didn’t like it, so I switched to Lamictal. I kept the dose as low as I could, too, so that I still experienced some minor mood fluctuations. It’s a balancing act, but it really is worth it.

My cousin never stuck with his meds and ended up killing himself two years ago. You have to remember that bipolar disorder is a potentially fatal disease and you have to treat it like one. You can use exercise and diet, as well as supplements, to help control mood swings, but nothing will help more than finding the right meds. I went off my medication about 5 months ago to start trying to conceive, and I’ve managed to avoid the big swings, but I miss the stability of medication too.

Sandy asks…

How can I beat postnatal depression without the use of antidepressants?

It’s been suggested that I may have postnatal depression, I would like to try something other than antidepressants first can any one help?

PLEASE don’t give in to the whole ‘herbal supplement’ bullshit.

Herbs contain the same types of chemicals found in prescription medication, just in lesser quantities and in unrefined forms.

MOST PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS ARE DIRECTLY DERIVED FROM HERBS.

The chemicals found in herbs CAN be transfered through breast milk just like the prescription medications and otc medications.

Just because it is labeled as “Natural” doesn’t mean it is safe to use while nursing.

How do I cope with depression and stress?

I really do believe that I am in a depression right now. My life hasn’t really been easy the last couple of weeks, and I don’t do well under stress. I have been so stressed out. Im not as jolly as I was, and I just don’t feel myself anymore. I don’t have anyone to talk to, and I just feel like I have no one. I feel like Im all alone. What are some ways to cope with this? I really want to feel happy again.

vti answers:

I have a number of friends that have found success with Amoryn, so I’m more than happy to help spread the word about this product. It’s an all-natural supplement designed to help with feelings of depression. Amoryn’s formula contains Rhodiola Rosea, 5-HTP, and St. John’s Wort, among other ingredients. You can learn more about these ingredients and why they’re included in the Amoryn formula at http://www.amoryn.com/advantage.html. This website is actually has a lot of helpful info, so take some time to look around.

St Johns Wort seems to be one of the few supplements that has a substantial amount of clinical research behind it. If you’re looking for a St. John’s Wort (SJW) product, it’s my understanding that you need to find one that’s been standardized for hyperforin.

Jenny asks…

What is depression and behaviors of people who have it?

What is depression? What are the behaviors involved with it? Are there treatments available to correct it?

vti answers:

Clinical depression (as opposed to situational depression, which is when you feel depressed because of something like a break up, a death in the family, etc.) is something that happens in your brain. The brain of a depressed person lacks certain chemicals that regulate mood, namely serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine.

Antidepressants are usually the best line of defense, because they regulate those chemicals in your brain that are out of whack. However, they are not ‘happy pills,’ and moods must be monitored by a doctor while taking antidepressants (especially since a possible side effect is making your mood worse), and the person still needs to see a therapist and learn how to cope with their depression. Oftentimes these people will be on antidepressants for the rest of their lives–it is, for many people, a lifelong illness.
Other lines of defense include therapy (a must if you’re taking antidepressants), natural supplements like St. Johns Wort (usually best for people with mild, not severe, depression), exercise, light therapy, vitamins (especially Vitamin D), and support groups.

The symptoms of depression are varied, but a depressed person will exhibit at least some of these symptoms:
–Crying for no reason
–Feeling hopeless and helpless
–Not enjoying activities they used to enjoy; withdrawing from friends and activities
–Problems falling asleep and/or falling asleep and insomnia or sleeping too much; nightmares
–Feeling ‘in a daze’
–Difficulty concentrating; doing poorly in school; difficulty making decisions
–Thoughts of suicide; feeling like your family and friends would be better off without you
–Feeling guilty for no reason
–Changes in appetite (marked increase or decrease)
–Physical symptoms, like headaches and stomaches
–Decrease in self esteem
–Fatigue (mental and/or physical)
–Feelings of overwhelming sadness
–An inability to feel emotion

Sometimes depressed people will hurt themselves (ie. Cutting) and/or turn to drugs and alcohol

Hair growth question. Vitamins? Thanks!?

Ok so ive been researching this all day and i would like to know once and for all which is the best vitamin for hair growth. I have heard of biotin and trader joe’s darwin pills for hair skin and nails. I have heard of some other pills also but I forgot the names. I am leaning towards the Trader Darwin pills because of the price and i haven’t heard any negative side effects. I also don’t want thicker hair, just longer. Please tell me which one of all the pills out there has worked best for you. Price and any negative side effects would be helpful too. Thanks so much.

(ps. no nasty or rude comments please saying these dont work. i know these vitamins wont work miracles but hopefully i will get longer healthy hair. I know taking care of my hair better will help but this question is about the vitamins. your cooperation is greatly appreciated.)
I have also heard people break out because of biotin. Is this true for u?

vti answers:

Vitamins play an essential role in hair growth. You know how they say that your health reflects the beauty outside? Well same goes for your hair. Here are a list of vitamins that might help you:

1. Biotin – 5000 mcg recommended dosage – Also good for energy, weight loss, keeps color in hair longer, regulates blood sugar (especially for people with diabetes), depression. Can’t overdose since it’s a water-soluble vitamin. BUT it’s important to up your dosage SLOWLY.

2.Silica – Up to 400 mg – Also good for healthy bones, fortifies blood vessels, repairs and maintenances vital lung tissues, stops constipation, improves elasticity of joints, prevents Alzheimer’s disease (flushes out aluminum). The highest amount of Silica can be found in Bamboo Extract, since horsetail only has about 5% per 100 mg. Http://www.jashbotanicals.com/articles/silica_and_your_body.html

3. MSM – 2000 mcg every dose (since it flushes out every 12 hours) – Also good for bones, increase alertness, eliminate pain, anti-ager

4. Vitamin E – 400 IU – Good for hair, skin, and nails

5. L-Cysteine – Good for hair, since hair is mostly made up of this protein. Without L-Cysteine, hair would be nothing.

6. Fatty Acids – Such as Evening Primrose, Borage Oil, Flaxseed Oil, Fish Oil, etc – These help because it helps make hair keep it’s moisture, which leads to hair growth.

– You can also just take a Hair, Skin, and Nails Complex. A lot of people take the GNC type, but you can also just get Nature’s Bounty from Walgreens, or The CVS brand, and they’re both the same.
OR , just take a Multi-Vitamin.

Hope this helps!

Good products or vitamins for hair growth?

Recently I’ve been noticing my hair has been thinning out since the end of March. The length of my hair is fine it’s just it’s very weak and it is slowly falling away. I’m 17 and I weight 118lbs and eat very healthy. I don’t eat red meat and try to work out as much as I can. I also use this oil that protects my hair from heat when I straighten my hair. Thanks in advance.

vti answers:

There are certain vitamins that help promote the growth of hair in the body. Changing to a healthier diet is vital not only for hair growth but also for the general well being of your body.

Some of the most important include:

– Essential Fatty Acids

– The B Vitamins

– Antioxidants

– Sulfur

– Zinc

But vitamins and diet are only one part of it, you should also consider adding excercise and hair loss products into your hair growth solution.

Do Prenatal Vitamins Help With Hair Growth?

My hair is extremely thin…and has only started thinning out in in the past two years, and I’m 21. I’ve heard that prenatal vitamins help stimlulate hair and nail growth. Is this true? If so, is it safe to take them daily when you’re not pregnant? And if they don’t really help with hair growth, is there anything else I can take/do to make my hair thicken a little bit?

vti answers:

Pre natal vitamins are very good to take even if your not pregnant- if your trying to get pregant or if you are pregnant- and no they wont make you more suceptable to pregnacies,,LOL,,, the reason they tell you to take pre natal is because in those vitamins they have the hightest concertration of MM so as opposed to taking a sep b12 vitamin that has like 200mg,,, in prenatal its like 500mg,,it has so many things that your body needs, nutrients etc, thats its very healthy for you,, ive been using prenatal also and it really has made my hair grow faster but also thicker,, defanitly try,, and you dont have to go to your obgy you can buy over the counter they work just as good just make sure there the more expensive ones and not the 6.99 type,,lol;-)
Good luck,, heres to long thick beautiful hair

Does vitamin e help hair growth?

I have some gel capsule/caplets things (I don’t know what to call it) of vitamin e. I am trying to get my hair to grow as fast as it can. Im also using mane n tail shampoo and conditioner. Well does vitamin e help hair growth? What are some other tips for hair growth? Thanks

vti answers:

Do an Answers search and you will see many say Vitamin E did nothing to make hair grow faster.
The Aphogee products suggested in the other answer were found in tests conducted by Skin Deep Safety Database to have highly harmful and toxic ingredients. Do an online search with “Aphogee: Skin Deep Safety Database” to see.
Mane n Tail shampoos and conditioners were also found in Skin Deep Safety Database tests to have ingredients that seriously harm hair and scalp.
Tips for hair growth:
My hair grew unbelievably fast and new growth was forced with this totally safe (and low cost) treatment and see the testimonials from happy users on Answers below ##.

First massage into scalp a pure natural oil. EV olive or EV coconut oils are excellent, and then brush quite vigorously and firmly (best with a short bristled palm held brush) so you feel it stimulating scalp (35 /45 strokes or more preferably every day). It’s OK if scalp is irritated to a degree but stop if you get soreness.

You will see new growth in as little as one or two weeks.

Religious Booth?

I read quite some time ago that the government is setting up religious booth ( manned by monks ) at shopping centre to cater to the young and busy city people. I would like to know is this being implemented and is there one in Siam Paragon ?
I read in the website of BangkokPost last year, probably the proposal failed to materialise. According to the article , this booth is not to be used “spread” buddhism but Buddhist to seek advise / solace with the monks especially people in Bangkok are too busy to visit a temple

vti answers:

I’m living in TH now for 10years and have never seen a booth like this, also I’ve never heard about the government trying to go into religious affairs. Thais are still very devoted to buddhism and you see Thais any age and any background frequently visiting small temples and shrines to pray, this even happens in the middle of the most crowded business areas, like the Erawan Shrine next to Central world and Siam Paragon in Bangkok at the most busy intersection in Bangkok.
Every school countrywide starts in the morning with a gathering of all students outside with a little prayer and some buddhistic teachings about being a good human.

Sharon asks…

we are holding a carnival type party at my school? any ideas for booths?

so far all we have come up with is:
a cake walk
psychic booth
scavenger hunt

all ideas welcome?

vti answers:

Kissing booth (age appropriate)
beanbag toss
face painting
spray on hair color
goldfish toss
Have fun!

Carol asks…

confession booth issue please help?

well i have just been told jerking off is a sin, i jerk off give or take about three times a day for 3 years so if you multiply it means about 3285 times. how the hell am i going to mention all those times. and i could add only the ones that i came too which narrows down to 1 time a day

vti answers:

When I was your age I was doing it about 5 times a day.

Don’t worry about having to confess it. It isn’t a sin no matter what you are being told. If you are worried about it just pray to God yourself and ask forgiveness but it isn’t necessary.

Masturbation is normal and natural. It will be a part of your sex life always. Even when you are in a relationship or married you won’t be having sex as often as you wish so you will still be spanking it on occasion.

So enjoy jerking off as much as you want now. Remember all your friends are doing it just as much as you are and some more often. Teen guys are horny little devils.

Chris asks…

I’m really pale – can I still go to the tanning booth?

I’m really pale – almost snow white – and I’d really like to get some color. I have freckles and dark hair, so I’m not really a typical light type, but I do easily get a sunburn.

I don’t want to be totally tanned, just look a little healthier! I work a lot, and I won’t get a chance to go on vacation for a while due to work, but I’d really like to look a little less deadly pale this summer.

Can I go to a tanning booth or is it too risky?

Thanks!!

vti answers:

A minute you are in a tanning booth, that’s a minute TOO long to take a risk in getting melanoma.
Tanning comes & go, unless you do them everyday 24/7 for the rest of your life. But in the end the only thing you’ll benefit is either moles, freckles or discolorations from sunscreens, lotions, etc. And the more you do, the more they get larger, darker & bumpier. Like exercising, your muscles will sag, when suddenly you stopped, same with getting a tan, they will fade.

SPRAY tanning: Whether they’re from airbrushing, mist on booths, or aerosol cans, a new problem is starting to reveal itself and that is the atomized inhalation of the solutions. Check the ingredients so why would you want that stay on your skin, even for a minute?

According to the FDA’s good manufacturing processes and to the extent that these ingredients can be avoided, DHA may contain up to 3 parts per million of arsenic, 20 parts per million of lead, and 20 parts per million of iron.

Tanning, is a result for ‘damaged skin’ and no products can reverse you from skin cancer or damaged skin, may prevent you from pre-mature aging, but that’s part of the billion dollar beauty industry.
A new study conducted by the Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Dermatology has found that tanning bed exposure can be dangerous when tanners self-diagnose skin problems and use the radiation to treat skin eruptions. The study specifically found that a tanning bed user that used the radiation to treat a mild skin rash caused by an ibuprofen allergy developed a much more severe reaction called toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). When left untreated, TEN can be fatal.
March 5, 2011 2:28 PM:
Melanoma is the leading cause of death from skin disease. An estimated 68,130 new cases of melanoma were diagnosed in the United States during 2010 and about 8,700 people died from the disease, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Getting wrinkly, early-aged skin

Getting nasty, painful sunburns

Getting skin cancer
This year, 56,900 new cases of skin cancer will be reported; most of these people (not so coincidentally) don’t take care of their skin when out in the sun.
Google: Warning in Tanning beds: About 1,440,000 results (0.16 seconds)

Google her and see what she looks like 2010.
“Plastic Week: Lisa Gastineau On The Dangers Of Tanning Beds”

She had 2-3 melanoma moles removed, one by her nose. She had nose surgery just to get her nose straighter, so she can breath again. She got those moles from a tanning bed.

I DON’T think you can predict your future.

Who cares if you have white skin, at least you will look beautiful when you get in your 50’s, and girls with whiter skin will look YOUNGER looking in their 50’s if you know how to preserve your skin.
I just came for a vacay in Ireland, and many of the people there working in the profession (luxury hotels and banks, etc.) have beautiful white complexion!

I’ve been protecting myself from the sun since age 9, but no matter, I got Discoid Lupus. Google that one. It was like someone punched my chin and it gave a purplish mark. It took 12 years for that to fade, so now I’m using a wide brim hat or umbrella for protection. Gene Simmons & Shannon both have been seen hold an umbrella during an event. They were invented before beauty products, for a reason.
HOW OLD DO YOU LOOK . . . REALLY?
Blame genetics all you want, but it’s really about how you’ve treated your skin. Dr. Michael Roizen, M.D. Internist & author of the RealAge books, to quantify the effect your habits have had. The quiz is designed with a 28yrs. Old in mind. Damage is cumulative, so if you’re older or younger than 28, the number on the right would be slightly higher or lower.

Take your age and add the number of years listed on the right for every ‘yes’ answer.
1. Have you had more than 10 bad sunburns in your life? + 25 years
2. Do you have red, itchy eyes from allergies: + 25 years
3. Are you a regular smoker? + 2 years
4. Do you live in a highly polluted city? + 25 years

Now subtract the number of years on the right for every ‘yes’ answer.
1. Do you cleanse your skin every day? – 1.5 years
2. Do you get seven to nine hours of sleep each night – 1.5 years
3. Do you wear sunscreen regularly? – 1 year
4. Do you have dark brown skin tone? – 1 year
5. Do you regularly wear moisturizer? – 1 year

Source(s):
I took the test, I’m 7 years younger, but people thought I look more like I’m in my 30’s, but I’m 30 years older than that.

aussie or herbal essences?

vti answers:

I would do Herbal Essences because i use their totally twisted and it works great! But aussie is more for straight hair….. It worked okay on my curly hair, but herbal essences has more lines if you have long hair they even have a line for that….. I LOVE HERBAL ESSENCES!!!!!! :))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Mandy asks…

sunsilk or herbal essence?

which is better?
my hair is layered.. and it doesnt really matter to me bout the smell jux that it helps ur hair better.. like softness, and straightness.

vti answers:

Herbal essence
it’s just been around longer and i think it’s more effective
it does smell good too
and it works better than sunsilk

Thomas asks…

VO5 or Herbal Essences? Which is best?

I’ve used Herbal Essences for a few years now and it works okay and smells very good. But some say VO5 works better and it has biotin in it….So which do you think is best to use?

vti answers:

Herbal Essences! I am not kidding, I used V05 once and it was the worst shampoo I have ever used! If it get’s in your eyes, it can blind you, and guess what? It got in my eye! It didn’t blind me because my eyes are not too sensitive, but it hurts for days, and stings and it doesn’t come out to often. Also, another problem with it is it stains highlighted or dyed hair, and can even change the color. I find it doesn’t work at all. Herbal Essences Dangerously Straight Shampoo with pear is a very good shampoo. Stick with that one honey, you will not regret it!

Jenny asks…

Is Herbal Essences good?

is herbal essences none of your frizziness any good(shampoo and conditioner)? What would u rate it out of ten? Is there a good deep conditioner that can be found in drugstores?? Would u reccomend anything else? My hair is very friizy and poofy and has flyaways. Its also very thick. Thanks! 🙂

vti answers:

I love Herbal Essences and would trust anything that they come out with. All of my hair products are from them except for my heat protectant (TreSemme), and that’s only because Herbal Essences doesn’t make a heat protectant. I’d say go for the shampoo, I occasionally use the leave in cream if I have fly-aways and that works really well. And, if you don’t like it for some reason, it’s so inexpensive that you can afford to just throw it away if you don’t want the hassle of returning it. 🙂 Another big plus about Herbal Essences is that all their products smell absolutely amazing. 🙂 Hope you find what you’re looking for!

Donna asks…

how does herbal essences work?

if you use herbal essences tell me how it works for your hair. also if you have thick frizzy hair does it tame it good?

vti answers:

Herbal Essences is one of those drug store brands which is not good for your hair. The ingredients contain silicone in it which is very bad for your hair the more you use it. Besides it damaging your hair, it does not help at all with the frizz or the condition of your hair. Other bad drug store brands are Garnier Fructis,Pantene,Vive Pro,etc. The only drug store brand that’s actually good for your hair is Tresemme. It doesn’t damage for your hair, works very well, and is very inexpensive:)
